Dishonest ending to good movie (SPOILERS!)

I thought the film was good, rather like an After-School special, but with more imagination and charm. However, I think it outstays its welcome and the proper length for the story would have been an hour, just like an After-School special.

However, my beef is with the resolution of the "romance" plot. On the commentary track, director Blair Treu says that Emily ends up with David because he believes that's what would happen in real life. I have numerous problems with this statement and the way it plays out in the movie. First of all, there is something offensive about the way Philip hands off Emily to David as if she were his to give. Also, seeing Emily form such a strong bond with Philip and then wanting to date his older brother makes her seem much more shallow than she ought to be at the end of the movie, after the action of the film has supposedly matured her. After all, David's barely been around through most of the movie, and he was involved in something she finds heinous and nearly unforgivable (the drunk driving incident).

I don't see why the film had to end with a conventional romantic resolution at all. What would most likely happen in real life is that the three would become very close friends and neighbors and not have any romantic involvements with each other at all. If they do, then save it for a sequel, Mr. Treu, where you might have more time to explore the repercussions of two brothers wanting to date the same girl, and the issue of the age difference between Emily and Philip, who are clearly the romantic couple here, despite Philip's age.

Just my two cents.

"You stink of horse."

Yeah I can see why people would be annoyed with the ending. It seemed really rushed to me.

"I don't see why the film had to end with a conventional romantic resolution at all. Other then that I thought the movie was great but I'm not totally devastated that she ended up with David, to me it's not as realistic as the 3 becoming friends but it's more realistic then Emily dating Philip.

I agree. Furthermore that kiss between them was completely unnecessary and it did ruin Emily's character, making her look shallow wanting to move ahead in that pace. Even if a romantic involvement between the two was planned, holding hands would suffice.
That is either director's weekness or producer's pressure. Eitherway it's minus a point for my vote.

PS. Found out it's the same director-producer so he's not that good after all.

I hated the ending and it nearly ruined the film for me! I too didn't like how she chose the older brother. Or even why she did want to choose somebody and thank them with a kiss. She barely knew the older brother at all and thought he was stupid (the drinking thing) so it seemed like a really flimsy relationship compared to all the time she'd spent with the younger one. It seemed like she was going for looks (I thought the younger one was cuter, but they made it clear her character didn't) and age and that was all. I also didn't like the way the brother seemed to hand her over.

Did they even really need the older brother in the film?? It could have did good without him. It would have been cliche to end up with Phillip but i would have rather her end up with Phillip or no one at all then David. He was barely in the film. I hate when they chose to end films like that.
