shareWhat do you want to know?
Joe Campbell was a professor and the diffinitive expert on mythology. This miniseries changed my life when I saw it originally air on PBS. I still rewatch it about once a year.
Joe explains mythology and how it influences society and cultural belief systems. If you haven't been exposed to this material before and you have an open mind, it will have a profound effect.
I saw that episode of the Gilmore Girls too! I was really surprised, because they usually reference films in the entertainment genre. I was really surprised Rory liked it so much, because while I find I really like Rory's literary taste, I really havent her cinematic taste, glad to see that's not so limited.
shareI think the reason they chose this is precisely because it's not in the entertainment genre, to juxtapose the utterly hedonistic atmosphere of spring break.
shareI got here because of The Gilmore Girls too!!
Really funny how you find good stuff out this way...
anyway, I saw more of Joseph Campbells work and used it for a paper for school, he really knows what he's talking about and is very passionate about it, i would definitely recommend it!
me too ;-)
shareme too!
shareI too felt I had to look up the title after seeing that Gilmore Girls episode. Getting it now from http://dvdboxoffice.com/ for $45. It's not bad at all considering it's 360 min.
shareI'm watching that episode this very minute...
shareomg...same episode....i think we're a little obesessed.....
shareGilmore Girls....man I miss them. I saw the episode too, then I saw The Power of Myth and I really liked it. I mean it definitely kept my interest even if it's kind of long. I don't think I's watch it 5 and a half times like Rory did...but I definitely enjoyed watching it once. All 6 episodes of it. LOL.
shareHa- i am actually watching it now too! But I planned on looking it up a while ago
I want to watch this movie now though.....
LOL I found my way here because of the Gilmore Girls too. It looks really interesting I might buy the DVD's.
shareI too have found my way here from Gilmore Girls. This miniseries looks very interesting - i'll have to rent it next time i go to the video store. It's pretty sad we're learning about such interesting things from Gilmore Girls. I feel like i should have known about it already haha.
sharehaha.
I felt the exact same way. I'm usually so proud because I get all of the the gilmore girls references; so that's why I had to look up 'the power of the myth' finally- I felt so stupid for having no idea what they were talking about.
Wow. Kudos to Gilmore Girls! I was impressed when they had a Siouxie & the Banshees song playing in the background once, but I'm just a comparative religion nerd who loves Joseph Campbell's books in this case. Most of his books are really scholarly and might be hard to get through for some. I would recommend this, or his book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" for beginners.
shareHmmm....
If I ever produce a movie, I'll make sure my marketing people get the gilmore girls to talk about it...
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.
Too late, the show ended recently.
Anyway, I remember one of my lit teachers in high school nmentioned it, and that reference was re-enforced by the GG reference. i don't think I've seen that episode since it originally aired, though, and I was going through the episode list when I saw that title. And then I asked myself, "What's the Bill Moyers thing Rory, Paris and Mrs. Stackable like so much?"
And now, I'm hear, and not particularly embarassed about it. I'm going to seek out someone with a copy.
"We're not our skin of grime... we're all golden beautiful sunflowers inside"- Allen Ginsberg
yea my g/f was watching gilmore girls and i seen them talking about this so i looked it up
shareWho's Mrs. Stackable? I'm a Gilmore freak and have never heard of this character. It's an ep from Season 6 when Rory and Paris go on spring break and end up watching it.
shareHey I am here because of Gilmore Girls also. I actually paused the show to look this up.
sharenrho,
I was referring to the an English teacher I mentioned earlier in that paragraph. Mrs. Stackable is a real person, not a character.
count me in for that club :-)

the METAL!!!
it comes from HELL!!!
Caught the first series of Gilmore Girls while living in Thailand but am only now catching up with the rest of the show as it is showing on UK E4 channel everyday. Sad to say I do reference everything, Rory, Paris or Lorelai rave over.
I enjoyed the Living Art episode that was pure class and I spent ages trying to find out Renoir's lady in red before they depicted it.
So, anyway this Ep is series 4 episode 17 that refers to 'Power of the Myth' which is not available on 'Lovefilm.com' yet and out of stock even on region 1 of Amazon UK. Although I have noticed it's on Amazon U.S. for $254.39 bargain??
and nothing on ebay.
I think I'm going to really miss 'Lorelai' by the end of the series. I don't know anyone like her.
I happen to know Mrs. Character is not a real Stackable, just plays one in the theater (of Death).
Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.
I too came here because of Rory. Such an awesome show from left-field. Too bad I only got into it after it was cancelled would've loved to see each episode as it was coming out.
