Why not have a WOMAN as the main character?

America Ferrera was only 16 when she did this movie

I think they used a teenager as the main character because it was more realistic. Not JUST in the latin culture, but in the overall American culture, the older generations are set in their old fashioned ways.

Maybe not as strict as the movie portrays, but the younger generation is the generation that is most likely to have that determined attitude that "Real Women Have Curves" attitude. The Baby Boomer generation (people aging 40+) and X generations (30-40) are a bit more attached to their traditional ways of sticking to the book and fitting into the normal ways of society. The younger portion of the Y generation is seen as more rebellious and is more likely to have the "individuality" ideas.

I don't think having an older person would have fit all that well with the character no matter what culture/race she was...muchless into the very traditional Latino culture.

Because she grows into a woman. Hence the cliched explanation of this movie as "coming of age" story.

The vampires were all "argh"
And you were all "ahhh"

Who cares how old she is? All that matters is whether or not she did good in the role and made it her own
