WTF?!! 6.5??

Seriously? This is one of my top five films. Absolutely engaging gem of a film, everything Hollywood should take note of. Whomever hasn't experienced meeting someone so alive with ideas that you are shaken awake from your ho hum doldrums of daily existence needs to digest this story- BEAUTIFUL!!! and absolutely hilarious! 10/10

I agree. It deserves a higher rating. It is an exceptional movie in its own unique way. 10/10.

I wanted to like it, but I found it to be ok... was a little bored. Maybe its just my mood... Usually really love a lot of the actors in the film. Wasn't my cup of tea.

Sad reflection on IMDBs users that this gem is so underrated.
All that comes to my mind is people will not accept or give an honest viewing to films outside the mainstream.
Either that or the Winnebagos have skewed the results to keep their conspiracy quiet!
One of those rare movies that can be viewed time and again still appreciated and something new gleaned from each viewing.

The Winnebagos !!! Too funny dude.

I agree & bet if more people had voted, this would easily come out as a 7,5 to 8.

~Much enjoyed the Newfoundland setting/ atmosphere also!

The end left me with one question though...

After seeing your comment a few times I have to ask why you think that more voters would have translated to a higher rating? I would assume that more voters would bring the score closer to what the average moviegoer would rate it, which I assume would be lower.

not really sir. if you notice, the very best ever films never go above a 7 or 8 and many many of those fall around 7

so in view of this, 6.5 is actually right up there with scorcese and michael mann etc

You're absolutely right. I had been feeling down for a while, but this wonderful film really lifted my spirits and, as the saying goes, restored my faith in humanity :) Gem is the right word for it.
10/10!

I just watched this and it was just lovely. I could watch films like this all day long!

What we have here is failure to communicate!

Yep, this kind of thing happens to me a lot. (Same thing happened for me with the film that led me to this one: Birder's Guide to Everything, which I thought was just about perfect.) I think it has a lot to do with peoples' lowered expectations for independent films. (Also, Canadian films seem to have somewhat of a bias against them in the ratings.) I've got a friend who only really wants to see a film if it's got that big studio stamp of approval. It's almost impossible to get him to see anything else, and even when I can he almost never seems to like it. I think I can get him to see this one, though, because there are only two or three degrees of separation between him and William Hurt. He keeps mentioning that, but doesn't even recognize Hurt when he sees him in a film. :)

Anyway, I'm about to do my part by rating this film a 10. That ought to bump the rating by a fraction of a fraction of a percent. :)

Your comments made me laugh. Having people still comment on this thread 6 years later is a true testament to the validity of this film and how the film resounds in ones lives. I think we can all relate to the friend that only sees blockbusters. A suggestion would be to try old films. If he can't get into an old Hitchcock movie you should look for a new friend. Anyway thanks for the reply. Take care and watch out for The Winnebagos.
