In the book it was smell you, but considering it cornered Harry at the grate later on it wouldn't have made sense. So instead of making the scene more like the book they had to change how the snake was able to sense Harry.

Rowling got a few things wrong about snake. In the first book, the snake winked at Harry, but snakes don't have eyelids. And snakes are deaf, so Parseltongue doesn't even make sense.
