A book question: why does Hagrid send them into a death trap....

Hagrid sends them into a near certain death trap.... for no apparent reason. At least according to the movie, but I wonder if the books explains this any better?

Why send them towards the dark forrest spider king?

All they leaned was that Hagrid was innocent 50 years ago, but Hagrid could have said this himself and all in all not that relevant anyway ... what was the reason in the book?

Hagrid always misreads any situation that involves dangerous animals. Hagrid assumed that Aragog would politely listen to Harry and Ron, and probably serve them tea as well.

What was Hagrid hoping they would get from Aragog? As far as I can see it serves no purpose in the moive... besides that Hagrid in fact did not open the Chamber 50 years ago.... but this could be said by Hagrid himself and in the movie this info was irrelevant to the quest our friends were on. So why send them in this direction?

Hagrid had been arrested and taken to Azkaban at this stage - not because Fudge believed it was actually him but because he wanted to be seen as doing something. He wants Aragog to reveal the truth to Harry and he incredibly naively assumes Aragog won't hurt Harry and friends because they are friends of his.

Thanx, I see now why he did it.
