Why does everyone hate this one?

I think the Harry Potter films are overall decent adaptations. I find the books to be better, but the films capture the world fantastically, are excellently cast and are adapted to the screen well enough to allow changes for film without sacrificing TOO much of the plot (which is VERY complex).

I don't get why people hate CoS. I find it expands the world and deepens the bond between the characters. It also is a generally faithful adaptation. If anything, the fifth film is the weakest to me. The book is drab and somber, but it's meant to be, but it's not boring, like the OotP film is.

It seems people find it too much like Sorcerer's Stone and a bit of a cut and dry adaptation. As for myself, I enjoy Chamber of Secrets immensely. I consider it a lovingly faithful adaptation with great world building and atmosphere. The tone of the entire movie is masterful. It also has great music and practical effects. The basilisk CGI and animatronics still look great well over a decade later.

I like it very much but it drags way too long and the acting is cringe worthy sometimes. Also, the fact that Hermione is missing for a good chunk doesn't help.

It was my favorite of the books and the movie is fine although Dobby and Ron are a bit too annoyingly overdone.
I guess why a lot of people like it the least is it can seem to be overshadowed by PoA and Goblet which went in a pretty different direction and introduced more popular elements (the Marauders, the darker tone, some of the shipping possibilities, more of Voldemort in the present, in the latter Harry as a more public action hero).
A lot of the new characters and elements in Chamber (Ginny, Lockhart, Myrtle, Colin, Dobby, Aragog) ended up relatively minor to the saga and/or controversial.

I think both the book AND film get overlooked. CoS tends to be a lot of people's 'least' favourite chapter of the series, at least from what I've noticed. I always saw it as an underrated chapter. The mystery of who TM Riddle is, the spooky myth about this secret chamber and what the monster is that is attacking students, meeting Aragog in the heart of the forest, just the general dark atmosphere. That and it still manages to provide us with one of the funniest characters in Gilderoy Lockhart. I think for the most part Chris Columbus did a really good job in adapting what was always one of my favourite books of the series.

It's come up from least to 3rd least film for me.

To be fair, it is the longest film in the series which can be a bit much with so many similarity traits of the one previous.

The last film that Richard Harris was in. If most of the haters are like me, it was not because of anything that had to do with the film; however, without a good Dumbledore, the rest of the movies were not as good.

If this movie retreads TSS, to me it was an improvement. To be fair, TSS was tasked with setting up the world of HP so this filmn to me is TSS without wasting time on the set up.

^This. OotP was such a struggle to read, my least favorite of the books I have read (and last HP book I read) and the movie was just mundane. I know it's supposed to be where things take a turn for the worst for these characters but I couldn't help but feel it was just filler save for some scenes, especially with the rushed montages. And what's with the annoying blue filter?

I think it's boring (I usually fall asleep watching it). A good twenty minutes of non-essential to the plot material could of been cut out.

It used to be one of my least favourite Harry Potter films when I was more interested in them being fast-paced and exciting with heaps of action, but as I got older I appreciated the first two more (especially the second) and the later ones less. I like how CoS takes its time to slowly build up the mystery and to create a dark and creepy atmosphere. It was a genuinely dark film but not in the way the later films were by simply being more violent and putting colour filters on. In my opinion it's also the most 'complete' story of the series (of films at least). There are no loose ends, everything is set up well and has a good pay-off. It being the longest film also helped give everything more time to breathe, since I feel the later films were way too rushed and didn't give enough time to just relax and get immersed in the story.
