Austin Powers 4 - Mike Myers Returning for another

I'm not sure if the world is ready for it, but there's going to be an Austin Powers 4 either way. Mike Myers is set to return and I can only say that I hope the franchise feels a little refreshed from how bad it had become in Goldmember. I hated that movie.

Check out my article on it here: http://grizzlybomb.com/2011/08/13/the-return-of-austin-powers-yeah-bab y/

What's everyone else think? Yay or nay on another?

is this still happening?? I doubt it! considering how bad The Love Guru bombed, which had a lot of similar "Austin-style" humor, I think Austin's time in the light has faded, he's no Bond!

I wouldn't put a Straight-to-DVD non-Mike Myers starrer out of reach though...they did it with a third Ace Ventura!

"considering how bad The Love Guru bombed, which had a lot of similar "Austin-style" humor"

WHAT?

Are you seriously claiming THAT movie had HUMOR??

I watched the whole thing, didn't spot even one (1) second of humor anywhere.

Nay on another. I actually enjoyed all three films but things were definitely running out of steam by the third. Mike Myers is talented but he has a bad habit of doing the same things over and over again when they're a success to the point where they're just not funny anymore. Wayne's World and Linda Richman on Coffee Talk were two bits that were hilarious at first but were so done to death that by the end, I cringed every time I saw them. Even in Goldmember, he recycles his old "KC and the Sunshine Band" joke from his Jean Chretien impression on SNL. I realize he's looking for something surefire to revive his flagging career, but doing another Austin Powers film might actually be the final nail in the coffin for him.

Even thought the 3rd film was decent but I do agree that it did use a lot of the same recycled jokes in a somewhat different way in the first 2 films since a lot of them are sex jokes. Even though Goldmemeber concluded the main storyline but it did leave it open for a 4th film with Scott now head of the Evil Empire.

The only way that another Austin Powers movie can work at this point is that if it riffed on the "grittier" spy movies of recent memory like the Daniel Craig era Bond movies or the Bourne franchise. The Austin Powers movies more or less, riffed on the campy Sean Connery-Roger Moore Bond movies.

reply

There was nothing campy about the original Connery Bonds. They should not be mentioned in the same sentence with Moore’s crap.

I thought YOLT (and DAF to a lesser degree) was quite campy.

You thought wrong.

The original trilogy lampooned the spy franchise, especially James Bond.

In some ways it was well-handled, especially the first two.

If another is being developed, they are better off finding updated movies to lampoon. And not revel in nostalgia.

For example, Indiana Jones 4: The Quest for Big Profit, had the writers doing more to copy old movie scenes than to actually do something new, much less think of why the characters are redoing old scenes. There are a number of reviews that really trash this movie - rightly so - as being derivative, with little thought put into the movie, rendering it a waste of time and money for all involved. Especially the movie going audience, who have less money than ever and for a zillion reasons not related to this topic. I wouldn't spend $10 for a ticket plus $20 for junk food just to see a lazy retread that profiteers of its own past while doing nothing new. Taking real risks doesn't always work, but I'm far more inclined to forgive because they tried. Just ripping off one's own past is a glorious insult...

So, what can Austin IV do that tries something new that doesn't rip off its current legacy, while remaining true to the feel of the franchise since "Austin Powers" is its own brand... (yes, I could mention the 2009 "Star Trek" movie that does something new but, apart from trademarked names and visuals, is nothing like anything that is true to the franchise and felt like a bunch of set pieces from the old Trek movies thrown in, complete with 4th wall breaking references... it's another nostalgia exploitative piece... its sequel had better pony up the goods or else the cast will end up no better than a group of lame copycat wannabes. Except this isn't a piece of fan production fluff, it's an actual big screen product. Scary... seriously...)

a 4th one has a lot of potential now. It can get a lot of material with all the stuff out now. They could parody gangnam style and justin bieber, twilight, anything..

that would be absolutely vomit inducing.
Thats what "meet the spartans" etc is for
