A new X-COM sequel on the horizon...

It's been an industry rumor for a while now, but it's been recently confirmed by 2K Games (who have owned the X-COM franchise license for a few years now) that a new X-COM game is in the works. What it'll be, exactly? Too early to say, but I also took the liberty of confirming the news with a friend of mine who works for 2K Games (He worked on BioShock, and even System Shock 2 back in the day) - he says he was involved in the project for a short while, before being pulled away to work on DLC for BioShock.

At any rate, it's happening - a new X-COM. I'll update this thread when I hear anything new. I'd be happy with a re-envisioning of the first game.

Your friend was right on! Two years later rumor is confirmed to be true.

And by the looks of it it will suck.

However, there is a iPhone clone game in the offing

Suck?

Well, the demo is chugging kinda slow on my not-exactly-old PC, but it certainly seems to keep the turn-based tactical battles (with plenty of tension, wondering if an alien is going to be where I'm expecting or if I'm positioning my squaddies to get flanked)

And the base-building and global operations were glossed over in the demo, but they too look to be faithful to the original game.

But then again, Sid Meier's Firaxis *can* be trusted to take an existing property and keep the essential spirit alive as they update it with the developments that have come along since the original.

...though, I wonder what the equivalent to 'dancing with the governor's daughter' will be in X-COM: Enemy Unknown. ;)
