you guys are on crack

This is basically a response to the misguiding comments of ALL (without exceptions) previous reviewers of this movie on this website. All of you who havent seen this movie, and arent enthusiastic about watching it after reading the previous reviews, I hope this undoes the damage. Otherwise, you would have been criminally denied of on of the better two and a half hours you would have in your life.

I thought this movie was incredible. If you think Reservoir Dogs isnt meant to be funny, I dont know which movie you were watching. All Tarantino's good films come with humor like this (the most obvious example is Pulp Fiction).

Id seen Reservoir Dogs long before I saw Kaante, and when I heard that it was a copy, I was very apprehensive and scornful about watching it as I thought it would fall flat in every way, and most critically, in the end, when the tension on screen has to be brought to the audience, to be really appreciated. I was remarkably proven wrong. In every way imaginable - and then some!

Anybody who thought the acting in the film was lame really must be some dimwit Govinda, Shahrukh or Hrithik Roshan fan. If Mahesh Manjrekar doesnt get an award for this movie, it will be a much bigger crime than Shahrukh getting Best Actor for DDLJ over Aamir for Rangeela, and Salman Khan for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, over Manoj Bajpai for Satya - and prove even more what sellouts the judges for the Filmfare awards are. The direction and acting were as close to professional as Hindi movies have gotten, with no unnecessary Govinda histrionics, and the optimum level of seriousness needed. Granted Kumar Gaurav and Sunil Shetty didnt have very demanding roles, but they played them perfectly, without getting in the way of the three, maybe two, that stole the show, namely Sanjay Dutt, Amitabh; who was well within himself for a change, and played this with a sensibility that even an actor like Al Pacino seems to be lacking at this stage in his career, where he shouts way too much in every film, and tries to portray that he is above other actors, solely because of his (granted very good) track record; and an astounding performance like Mahesh Manjrekar.

I cannot think of many roles in the recent past that have been played with such honesty and involvement, so convincingly as Mahesh Manjrekar did IN HIS DEBUT AS AN ACTOR!

The only blemish on this film was an utterly weak performance by Lucky Ali, who couldnt even laugh convincingly at the genuinely funny jokes in the movie. Maybe Im wrong here though, and the director is above me - meaning it to be that, to show that Lucky Ali's character is actually nervous, for obvious reasons. But this is only a minor blemish.

The dialogue - what can I say about it - Id run out of adjectives to describe it - it is so well written. Granted some lines are directly lifted off(about the dog barking all day and not biting), but humor like this has hitherto never been seen on Indian cinema. If youd rather laugh at Govinda upset an apple cart and hold his lungi high while running away from an angered father whose daughter he was hitting on, then you shouldnt even be reading this post, cos youre obviously on a different wavelength from most other people who saw and thoroughly enjoyed this movie. To be more specific, WAY BELOW IT (the wavelength is what im talking about here, for you people with sub-100 IQ's).

Anybody growing up with some diversity in his/her life, not just in terms of cinema, but overall exposure and a different perspective, based on their upbringing and past experiences would enjoy this refreshing change of scenery thats been brought into the vista of entertainment, that is the Bollywood big screen. Short and concise movies like this; not involving unnecessary song and dance, tears and family get-togethers; with simple, short story-lines - not spanning 3 decades - are much harder to make as a director, editor, cinematographer - you name it! For the obvious reason that theres so much less to work with. Its never been done before, and it will require a monumental effort to match the expertise and professionalism that this film has been handled with.

As a closing note - the effects in this movie can only be enjoyed on big screen, so you guys in Houston, Texas and the rest of the world that didnt get to enjoy this movie to its fullest effect on big screen, my condolences to you. I saw this movie in Globus, a theater that boasts one of the best-sound systems in Bombay, and therefore, arguably the rest of India, and the slick surround sound effects akin to The Matrix, and scene-changers and rapid video movements ala Snatch, can only be experienced in its original packaging. I forgive you guys to a certain extent for lambasting this movie, as you were at a slight disadvantage. But the fact that you failed to appreciate the acting, the dialogue, and the other tide-changing efforts that were behind this landmark film, still counts heavily against you.

I hope you come to your senses and stop supporting unnecessarily weepy Barbie Doll actresses like Aishwarya Rai, and empty-headed conmen that parade as actors like Salman Khan and Govinda.

Catch this movie in the theaters if its not too late, or wait for the original copy to come out on home video. Its quality entertainment, and well worth 2.5 hours of your time, and also serves as a great conversation piece later on (needless to say, not with the other reviewers of this movie on this website and their equals, or even close superiors). Its way beyond them to appreciate quality productions like this.

-Tosh out.

reply

damn Tosh.....you're good....I thought I was the only wack job among us that even looked at imdb...apparently not!! It was a pretty good movie though the scene outside the bank seemed a bit like a "Heat" knock-off. Well-shot movie though.

reply

wow!! Finally, someone has publically said what i've been screaming out for years. I have not seen this film but i'm definitely watching it after reading your review. I absolutely agree with everything you have mentioned about bollywood films. Aamir Khan is my best actor because of the way he chooses to play characters that are realistic and he would make a fantastic director when he retires from acting. Kajol is just too good so she's my best actress. Any way, my point is i love Tarantino's movies and the reason i delayed watching Kaante was because, same as you, i thought they'd just completely ruin the flow of the original story as they do everytime they remake a hollywood film. That bugs me a lot. Any way, thanks.

Great posting! One small addition to this thread: how can anyone complain about Bollywood's "knock offs" of American films to begin with? Hollywood pillages Hong Kong and China ("Ring," "Dark Water," "The Eye," "Battle Royale," "The Phone"-- all of these and more have or are being remade as we type as Hollywood flicks), along with the rest of the world, on a regular basis, in a desperate attempt to guarantee financial returns on their outrageous budgets. And Tarantino? When are his films not pastiches of past films? "Reservoir Dogs" is fun *because* he borrows from Kurosawa, Ringo Lam, film noir, etc. Have at it, Bollywood! You reinvigorate and reinvent tired and worn-out storylines, making films that are truly entertaining! For that, you have my humble thanks!

reply

Ring/Ringu, Dark Water, and Battle Royale are Japanese films.
Phone is a Korean film. They are NOT Hong Kong/Chinese films.

Hollywood is permitted the right to remake these titles, not Bollywood. As much as I am not a fan of Hollywood remakes, they do not copy scene for scene like Bollywood does so some people do indeed have a right to complain.

Why do you think the makers of Oldboy might consider legal action for Zinda? This is because Mr. Sanjay Gupta plagirizes films very very well.

reply

Hollywood buys the rights to movies to remake them. India doesn't have copyright laws so Bollywood STEALS movies from Hollywood. That's the difference. Paying for a remake might give you a bad movie, but at least it's honest. Stealing isn't.

ok bruv i agree with u on some levels, Kaante was a good movie, (not a great one.) the acting was really good by everyone specially mahesh, the thing i have against this movie is the fact that it tried copying from a movie they didn't understand. Dogs, is my fave movie of all time an as QT himself agrees with my thet this was is "best work" to date. QT, being the great writer he is, writes his charaters for a reason and purpose. and their personalities are never mixed up. unlike in Kaante. Sanjay was the one who went all beserk in the bank and started shoting(Mr Blond) but then it came to the tourture scene it was mahesh's charater then went all phycotic, without showing ne signs of this behaviour prior to this scene. and the charm of Dogs was that it was a Heist movie where u dont see the Heist, so u dont really know what happended, and that is tottaly destroyed with that stupid Run Lola Run style"....and then" and the Heat showdown rip off. just to name a few. its a good movie, but not a one that will live on in our memories for long.Dogs is perfect movie and will always remain a classic. cant say the same for kaante.

I totally agree with you silver. QT is a genius moviemaker and that goes to show in even one of his lesser works like Jackie Brown, which was hands and shoulders above anything you will see in Bollywood as far as character development goes. But that does not take away the fact that Kaante is a sign of indian cinema coming of age. Instead of looking at the technical flaws/blemishes of the movie, we should see the better points like the editing and the production values of the movie which is not something we are used to seeing in Indian movies. I for one am one of the biggest critics of direct ripoffs, but movies like Kaante show mauturity on the part of the filmakers. I have rarely seen an indian movie that kept me interested for its entire length (give and take a few Satyajit Ray movies as well as a few artfully done ones in the 80s). Like most people here, i resisted watching Kaante for a long time because i didnt want to scream another mouthfull of cusses at Bollywood. It is unfair to compare indian movies to those being made here in the US because of the huge discrepancy in production values between the two. Filmaking is one of the biggest and most profitable industries here in the US where a lot of capital is pumped in, and when you compare it to Bollywood it is unfair for a meaningful artsy movie made in a few lakhs budget, struggling to break even! And like someone pointed out earlier, A lot of american movies are rip-offs from different cultures here they call it a remake! Kudos to Sanjay Gupta for trying to be different (He proves it again with Musafir) and bringing better production values to Indian movies; so what if he stitched the movie together from various other plots. For me, it is a step in the right direction. Go Kaante!

"Kaante" is proof enough that Bollywood is finally starting towards maturity. Very rarely do we have such a big collection of quality acting and none of them stepping on each other's toes or overshadowing the others. The action scenes are beatifully made, quite unlike regular Bollywood movies where the guns spill out a lot of smoke and nothing else. I guess its the 1st Bollywood movie which incorporates such a big collections of firearms, notably the mini-UZI, M-16 and the HK-MP5 with such ease. And of course, the M-16 has been thankfully placed in Sanju baba's hands; it would look clumsy in anyone else's hands. Sanjay Dutt looks so very natural on a Harley and handling big guns !

rememebr this

IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY

also the fact that so what is some one copied the other? it happens all the time

not like tarantino lost a load of money beacuse kaante was made

heck he should be happy that his work has made him much admired and copied

everyone copies the other

bollywood copies/ripoffs/isnpires from hollywood

hollywood does it from korean films, china, japanese films the whole 10 yards!

so whats with the name calling?

and all said and done kaante was a awesome film , lots of plot holes but still a great film, well crafted and shot

reply

I know this post is very, very late and won't get a response but I just have to point out the fact that hollywood obtains the rights to these films and bollywood doesn't - a big difference.

no my dear freind no one except me would bother to answer your article let alone praise it !

u might make "reservoir dogs" first and make a mess out of it!but after a decade I with my tech geeks and a bit diffrent style of direction change the whole look of the movie.....to say the least learn from ur mistakes!

my point here is ?

i ENTERTAINED people more than u! dont matter u made it 1st !

now dont go all ga-ga over me, i jus took reservoir dogs as an EXAMPLE here. no connection with the real reservoir dogs so hit me with somthing better !

although i saw R dogs n kaante i thought kaante was more stylish ! but thats me!

Wow, then you missed the point of Reservoir Dogs. Reservoir Dogs was not suppose to be "stylish". It was suppose to be raw, real, yet still a bit cool, but only because their characters were intelligent and realistic. Not stylish. Now I saw Kaante because I heard about it from Reservoir Dogs discussions, and it was good. It was a fun movie to watch, but it still felt very Bollywood, like there's a formula that they aren't quite willing to give up. All the things that made Reservoir Dogs distinct, dirty, and interesting were missing from Kaante, probably because of this unwritten formula. It played out more like a generic action crime film than a semi post-modern cinematic art that was Reservoir Dogs.
