Facial expressions

Did anyone else think that Hans Christian Anderson looked like he was constantly having an orgasm throughout the movie? Way too much over acting...

reply

no
well ok at times he looked excited but it was understandable excitement
who wouldnt be excited to leave their small town and see a large city for the first time,
to be in the palace of his nations rulers
to fall in love with a beautiful singer
to be successful doing what one loves to do

He was also portraying the child-like, eccentric, and possibly autistic nature of Andersen. If you've ever been around small children or slightly autistic adults, you might notice that they often use very big gestures and huge expressions to better convey their emotions.
I personally loved the way the actor portrayed him. =)

I thought he was appalling, as a matter of fact. No wonder he never went much further.

George... don't do that!

I just watched this on tv and besides excruciating facial expressions, his body/hand gestures were extremely aggravating to watch. He portrayed Hans as some kind of epileptic. Very annoying and distracting to watch.

reply

the way I picture him in my mind ( I was able to see his houses, the one in Odense, Denmark and where he lived for a while in Sintra, Portugal) he would be a very quiet person, low voice, shy

and very, very lonely, despite his travels and friends, writing or making the beautiful paper cutting he liked so much

- child-like, eccentric, and possibly autistic nature do not fit in the way I imagine him to be

reply

His portrayal was more like that of 'Edward Scissor hands'.

reply

Considering Anderson's obsession with masturbation, maybe it was a conscious acting choice?
