Summerslam 93 Review

Up next on my review list is what I considered to that time the weakest of the Summerslams. 1993. Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan are on commentary.

Match #1

Singles Match

The Million $ Man Ted Dibiasie Vs Razor Ramon

Razor had recently turned face by interfering and causing a loss for Dibiasie against the 123 kid. Dibiasie jumps Razor befor the match starts and chokes Razor on the ropes and using his standard arsenal of attacks. Dibiasie with a rib breaker and a two count. Ted drops him with a clothesline and gets another two count. Dibiasie using a reverse chinlock resthold. Typical situation here. Razor's hand goes down for two but he rallies on the third warning, Razor breaks the hold with elbows but Dibiasie drops him to the mat. Dibiasie with a swinging neckbreaker, haven't seen him use that one in awhile. Dibiasie with a belly to back suplex and he's going for the million $ dream. Razor fends him off then both guys collide with Dibiasie getting up first. While the ref ain't looking Ted takes off the turnbuckle pad and tries sendins Razor into it who counters and bashes Dibiasies face into it then Razor quickly slaps on the razors edge and scores the pin at 7:30. Not a bad opener. 2 stars. This would be Ted Dibiasies last WWF match.

Match #2

Tag Team Title Match

The Steiner Brothers Vs The Heavenly Bodies w Jim Cornette

Bodies jump the Steiners but Steiners fight back and knock the Bodies all over the ring. Bodies regroup outside. Finally we get Scott and Tom Prichard to start a legitimate match. Rick tags in and Prichard tries a hiptoss but Rick clotheslines him. Scott back in and he manhattan drops Prichard then gives Jimmy Delray one. Prichard catches Scott off guard then tosses him outside where Delray senton bombs him on the floor, nice move. Back inside Scott tries a clothesline on Delray who swings all the way around and counters into a ddt that the Rock would use years later. Heavenly Bodies were horribly underrated. Scott gets double teamed for a few moments. Delray sends Scott to the ropes and hits a crescent kick to take him down. Prichard in and he distracts the ref while Cornette takes a cheapshot at Scott Steiner. Delray back in and he tries that ddt counter again but Scott catches him with a belly to belly suplex counter. Prichard comes in and gets a double arm hook suplex and Rick Steiner tags in and slams everybody. Rick catches Delray with a bulldog from the top rope but Prichard breaks up the pin attempt. Things are falling apart. Rick Steiner gets clobbered and ALMOST gets pinned by Delray. Scott comes in to make the save and plants Jimmy Delray with a frankensteiner and gets the pin at 9:27. Not bad, felt a little short 2 1/2 stars.

Match #3

Intercontinental Title Match

Shawn Michaels w Diesel Vs Mr Perfect

Perfect cost Shawn the IC title to Marty Jannetty months earlier on Raw, and Shawns new bodyguard got the belt back for him. Both guys go through a nice series of counters and Perfect gains control of the match when Shawn does a backflip off the top rope and eats a clothesline from Perfect. Perfect working on the left arm of Michaels. Shawn sends Perfect to the ropes and tries a dropkick but Hennig catches him and slingshots him outside. Hennig goes after him but Disel distracts him long enough for Shawn to post him jaw first. Shawn is attacking Perfect's lower back now. Shawn fires Perfect into the corner and he hits hard on the lower back. Perfect can be clearly heard saying DAMN!! on camera, he's hurting big time. Shawn with a pendulum backbreaker. Michaels holding Perfect accross the knee and Perfect punches his way out of it. Perfect sent into the ropes and he catches Shawn with a dropkick. Perfect with an inverted atomic drop. Perfect chops Shawn then ropes him and hits a clothesline on the return. Both guys fighting for a backslide but Perfect goes for a perfect plex instead and ALMOST gets Shawn but Disel interferes and Perfect battles Diesel. Shawn wins by eventual countout at 11:15. Diesel ko's Perfect post match then after Perfect wakes up he attacks both guys backstage. Stinko ending to a good match. 2 1/2 stars.

Match #4

Singles Match

Irwin R Shyster Vs The 1-2-3 Kid

Being billed as a miracle underdog The Kid has scored two wins over Razor and one over Ted Dibiasie. Kid making his ppv debute here. He gets in some token offense with martial arts kicks and gets a couple of pinning combinations on IRS but IRS finally polishes him off with the write off at 5:43. Eh. 2 stars.

Match #5

Singles Match

Bret The Hitman Hart Vs Doink The Clown

Jerry The King Lawler was the original opponent but he came to ringside on crutches with an ice pack on his knee saying he wasn't able to wrestle, so he made his court jester Doink his replacement. Doink throws a bucket of water on Owen Hart and Bruce Hart who are at ringside and Heenan is loving it. Bret attacks Doink and beats him stupid for a few minutes. Hart goes after Lawler and Doink gets him with a high knee to change the momentum. Doink working on Bret's knee at the moment, even wrapping it around the ringpost, Doink goes for a pin but only 2. Doink slaps on a stump puller which is a rare submission move. Doink slams Bret then goes up top for the whoopie cushion/butt drop but dicks around and gets both knees in the hamstring area on the way down. Bret rallies on Doink and hits the russian legsweep then drops an elbow from the second rope. Bret hooks on the sharpshooter and gets the win at 6:59. 2 1/2 stars. Lawler jumps in and attacks Bret with one of his crutches. Lawler helps Doink to the backroom where president Jack Tunney orders Lawler to face Bret in a match!!!

Match #6

Singles Match

Bret The Hitman Hart Vs Jerry The King Lawler

Lawler takes a s*** kicking from Bret except from when he can use a piece of his crutch to choke out Bret. Bret piledrives Lawler then slaps on the sharpshooter and Lawler gives it up. Bret refuses to release the hold and a whole mess of WWF officials get into the ring along with Owen and Bruce trying to get Bret off Lawler. After about 4 minutes Bret finally breaks the hold but the ref reverses his decision for unsportsman like conduct and declares Lawler the winner and undisputed king of the WWF. Crowd boos Lawler out of the building who gets taken out on a stretcher. 2 stars.

Match #7

Singles match

Marty Jannetty Vs Ludvig Borga

Almost a total squash. Marty talks smack then turns his back on Borga who stomps a mudhole in his ass with jabs and slams and throws Jannetty high into the air and punches him on the way down. Jannetty tries a sunset flip but almost gets punched in the process. His best offense comes when he hits a crescent kick that stuns Borga then follows up with another then tries going to the second rope for a high cross body but Borga catches him and powerslams him. Borga slaps on a torture rack and Jannetty gives it up at 5:10ish. Meh. 1 1/2 star.

Match #8

Rest In Peace Match

The Undertaker Vs The Giant Gonzalez w Harvey Whippleman.

Taker goes after Gonzalez and tries dropping Gonzalez with numerous clotheslines but Gonzalez stops him with one shot. Both guys fighting outside and Gonzalez sends Taker face first into the steps. Whippleman has the Urn which his goons took away from Taker months earlier. Gonzalez lays out Taker with a steel chair. Gonzalez runs Taker into the steps and Taker is getting wasted at this point. Paul Bearer who hasn't been seen in weeks makes his way to ringside with a wreath and the crowd goes nuts and so does Heenan. Crackhead Whippleman attacks Bearer and Paul drops Whippleman with the worlds flabbiest clothesline. Paul Bearer gets the urn back. Taker sits up and starts hammering on Gonzalez. Undertaker catches Gonzalez with a clothesline from the top rope and gets the pin at 7:56ish. Gonzalez gets mad at Whippleman and kills him postmatch. Didn't seem as bad as Mania 9, but it was boring nontheless. 1 star.

Match #9

Six Man Tag

Tatanka and The Smokin Gunns Vs Bam Bam Bigelow w Luna Vachon and The Headshrinkers w Afa

Bigelow beats up Tatanka early but Buffalo turns it around. Both guys try a flying crossbody at the same time and end up hurting eachother. Billy Gunna and Fatu are in there next and Fatu kicks the teeth out of Billies face. Bart tags in and hits a bulldog on Fatu. Samu in and Billy is getting beat up in the corner by the heels. Bart tags in and gets a high cross body on Samu for a 2 count. He tries it a second time and gets punched out of the air by Samu. Bigelow back in and he dropkicks Bart and gets a two count. Fatu in and he powerslams Bart coming off the ropes for a 2 1/2 count. Bigelow throws Bart headfirst into both heads of the headshrinkers, Bart getting clobbered at this point. Headshrinkers headbutt eachother to show that they are thick headed morons, a common stereotype in wrestling. If you are from an island you will be booked as having an indestructable head and you are a cannibal. Tatanka hottags and ddt's Bigelow then goes uptop for the tomohawk chop and a 2 1/2 count. Bigelow hammers Tatanka who starts doing his inpenetrable war dance of death until Bammer kicks him in the head, that stops it. Everything breaking down now and Bigelow splashes Tatanka in the corner. Tatanka gets dropped in the center of the ring and Bigelow and the Shrinkers climb the ropes for a triple diving headbutt!!! Smokin Gunns interfere and in the confusion Tatanka rolls up Samu for the win at 11:03. Not too shabby 2 1/2 stars.

Match #10

World Heavyweight Championship Match

Yokozuna w Mr Fuji and James E Cornette Vs Lex Luger

Luger made his face debute on the 4th of July by slamming Yokozuna on the intrepid and has been riding a bus cross country building momentum for his title match at SS. Luger signed a contract stating that this will be his only title shot EVER, which means dick in the world of wrestling, also Luger has to wear a pad over his forearm where he had steel plates surgically implanted after a motorcycle accident. Luger has the early advantage even managing to knock down Yoko at one point. Fuji tries throwing salt in Lugers eyes but he dodges it then tries slamming Yoko but hurts his back in the process. Yoko hits a reverse thrust kick then knocks Luger outside. Yoko backs Lex up against the steel post then splashes him against it. Yoko grabs a chair but Luger ducks. Back inside both guys clothesline eachother and go down in a heap. Cornette distracts the ref so Fuji can give Yoko a wooden bucket and he parts Lugers hair with it. Yoko slowly crawls over for the cover but Luger kicks out at 2!!! Yoko belly to belly suplexes Luger and another close 2 1/2 count. Yoko chokes out Lex on the ropes. Yoko goes to the traps nerve hold of doom but Luger gets out of it after a few minutes, both guys sweating like pigs at this point. Yoko legdrops Lex and gets another close 2. Yoko sets up Lex for the banzai drop but misses and the crowd errupts!! Yoko tries hitting an avalanche in the corner but Lex dives out of the way and Lex ko's Fuji then uses the loaded forearm and floors Yokozuna who spills outside and is TKO!! Lex Luger wins!!.....by countout!!! Christ the wrestlers come out from the back and hoist him up while balloons and balloons fall from the ceiling like he just single handidly destroyed Saddam Huessain. Not a great main event but not horrible either. 2 1/2 stars.

Overall Opinion: One of the weaker Summerslams I think, and up until this moment in time it was probably the worst Summerslam ever. Back in the day I thought the ppv sucked as there were no title changes.

Final Score: On a scale of 0.1 to 10.0? Ill go with a 5.5

I miss the days when Title changes where rare, it helps make event like Summerslam 91 a big deal, at that time Every belt that was on the line changing hands (And all but 1 where, the one happening to be the biggest however) was unheard of I think.
