It's sad what "The Phantom Of The Opera" has become...

I've seen the 'stage production' (which wasn't bad)... but it doesn't compare to the book or the original silent horror film in 1925... so to make a film based on the stage production is pitiful.

There have been several film versions of the 'real story'... some good, many bad... but it brings a tear to my eye that such a brilliant horror story has become an atrocious musical abomination.

I like the musical and this film better than the book and silent film.

I would never claim that everyone will share my 'point of view'...

can you imagine if they made a 'stage production' of "The Exorcist"??

I can see it, just as Regan is about to spew vomit on Father Karras... they all start dancing!!!... LOL

reply

I can't tell if you're joking. They have made a stage version of The Exorcist. The Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles presented it in 2012, with Brooke Shields playing the mother, and Richard Chamberlain as Father Merrin.

I didn't see it, but a friend said it wasn't very good... And no, Regan's head doesn't spin, and she doesn't projectile vomit...

reply

Someone has never heard of Sweeney Todd lol.

Actually I am with you, so your not alone in your thoughts.

Though I really don't think that if it was done properly, many an audience could appreciate it. If it didn't include gore and more gore and even more, not many would be interested, just take a walk down any Halloween isle in the stores in the US these days to see where most minds are.

It happens to a LOT of properties: the Grimm brothers fairy tales, Frank Baum's Oz stories, the list is endless. Phantom of the Opera is hardly unique in that respect.

Sucks to be you. Fact of the matter is the book is not a classic and it's only remembered because of the musical. Like whatever you want but the public disagrees with you.
