Nothing special

Being a fan of the J-horror genre, I rented St. John's Wort, a little decieved by the cover. While there's potential, this movie falls short of my expectations. The 3D effects are just horrid for one thing. Gazing up at a poorly rendered mansion makes things seem a little less creepy and mostly just silly. Maybe this was intentional, considering the movie is supposed to be centred around a videogame. But I've seen video game graphics look a lot better...

There were also relatively no scares. As the two characters travel from room to room, you wait, half expecting something to jump out at them. The whole thing with the caretaker left me scratching my head. Who was he, exactly? Why was he watching the entire building with cameras?

One of the final scenes where Nami confronts her twin should have been scary or at least moving. But it was neither. It left me feeling a little empty and confused too. The final scene with the 'added part' in the game was supposed to be scary too I guess. But again, it wasn't that interesting.

Overall, St. John's Wort is a pretty tame and pretty poorly done movie and I think the video game angle probably ruined it.
