Game?

What is the name of the game that this movie is based on? I tried Otogiriso and St. John's Wort on Gamespot and nothing came up.. BTW the movie was ok but overall it was kinda boring.

reply

nm, it's Otogiriso. I checked the search engines, must be an import.

The game originally came out for the Super Famicom in Japan, then it was ported onto the Playstation but neither version of the game came out in any other countries.

I purchased this film last night and knew nothing about it. However, after reading the review on IMDB I am not sure wether I have done the right thing. I will not get the chance to see it until the weekend. Is it as bad as the review says?

reply

there are 3 pages of user reviews, ranging from 1 star to ten stars, so my answer would depend on which review you are talking about.

Perhaps you should live dangerously; watch it & make up your own mind.

I am watching it right now, and 1/4 through it it looks alright. lotsa weird colors --- looks like they used infra-red film or something.

reply

It wasn't based on any game. It was based on a book. It says so in the credits.

I, personally, didn't think it was all that bad. Really, really weird, however. But cool imaging.

And the "infer-red" imaging is supposed to imply that it was a video game.

Otogiriso was released by ChunSoft for the Super Famicom you moron.

Aw, you poor guy.

Don't read this before you watch the movie...now that it's yours.

Actually, the first half of this movie is pretty well filmed. I loved the fact that the audience occasionally watched Nami and her dude through the black and white grainy cameras. No sound. No color. No way to interpret what happens next. I thought that was a spectacular idea. Unfortunately, not trying to be cliche, but it's all downhill from there. There are far too many loose ends. Usually, like in The Suicide Club, I enjoy the opportunity to interpret the film as I wish but with the flowers in each picture, the music boxes going off randomly, or how in the hell Nami was "released" totally alludes me and doesn't give any more insight into the film. It's entirely incohesive. If all those loose ends were cleaned up it would be a much beter film.

Hopefully there's some type of pawn shop near you....

i don't think it was ever a video game, the way the movie was set up was meant to feel like a video game i think. it kinda reminded me of the first resident evil video game, as it was also set in a mansion. If you're a fan of video games like resident evil and silent hill you'll find that the way the movie is set up, is very much similar to them. that's the only reason i liked the film cause it reminded me of that. If they had only carried out the filming and set up of the resident evil movies in a video game style like this one, maybe i would have enjoyed the resident evil movie more.

basically point is, this wasn't based on a game, it was basically a movie version of what a game would be. The whole, finding a room with weapons, and finding keys and adding them to a collection you carry, and moving a cabinet to find a door hidden behind, that is very much in the style of resident evil games, which is the only reason i kind of liked this movie.

The game was released on Playstation in Japan in 1999. It was called Sound Novel Evolution Otogiriso Sosei-hen. There has been some speculation that the Fatal Frame game series was based on this game.
