I'm not sure why Mathew Broderick is cast in remakes of Musicals. He's slightly better in The Music man than he was in The Producers, but not much. He is too young, or at least looks too young for this part. I would have rather seen Victor Garber, (mayor Shinn) playing Broderick's part. At least he's old enough to play the part.
Matthew Broderick has so little force of will, that he couldn't sell lemonade in a desert. Sometimes type-casting is good. Someone with a larger personality should have been cast. Broderick is wrong for this.
Broderick and Garber were both were sadly lacking. Harold needs more punch and Mayor Shinn needs more pomposity and bombast. There's something about Matthew's eyes that make him look very dead and dull. He has to work really hard to put the emphasis in where the scene demands it. He is likable, despite all these flaws, but only in the love scenes did I feel he really was in his element. Kristin's line delivery upset me, too, but, on the other hand, I thought Shirley's reading in the earlier movie was too haughty and high-handed. Their singing was marvelous. The barbershop quartet sent chills up my spine, they were so spot on with those wondrous ringing chords. The costumes, choreography, orchestration and set design were fantastic. It made the casting choices all the more saddening and disappointing.
When I first saw this movie, I had not seen the original with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. I have to say, I loved the Disney version so much better. The love story between Harold and Marian was so much more believable in this version as well as the touching relationship between Harold and Winthrop. While Preston was more boisterous and animated in his performance, Broderick's voice is so much easier to listen to. I did prefer Shirley Jones to Kristen Chenoweth but Kristen does have a beautiful voice. One thing I did hate in this movie was the wardrobe. Cameron (Winthrop) was far superior to Ron Howard's portrayal.
