Meh: The Movie

Meh. That's it. That is what this movie "deserves", or rather, strives for and has earned. It is modern blockbuster "play-it-safe" world-building

I'm not "cringe af" and thus will not even begin to delve into whatever identity politics takes some of you losers have of this movie. This is a much more general review

It's a mediocre movie that has enough good qualities to justify its existence while being balanced out by enough bad qualities to make you regret the existence of movies in general

For every potentially interesting plot thread that it creates, whether it be Scorpion vs. Sub-Zero or the Special Forces vs. the Black Dragon clan, it balances it out with terrible filmmaking. It butchers characters like Raiden, Goro and Mileena. I would say that it "butchers" Reiko, but nobody gave a fuck about Reiko until it dawned on them that he could be maladapted in film and thus give them a valid reason to bitch and moan. It prostitutes Kano...?...!

That's it. I cannot progress further in my review because of the prostitution of Kano. It is so egregious that it merits revisional closure. Haha australian man funny. Haha let us exploit the writing device of "comedy relief" because screenplays are easier to write when you deviate from good storytelling to awkwardly inserted humor. It is a "valid" form of screenwriting in 2021, so I will not condemn this movie alone for it, because it received sanction from many blockbusters of the past few years

But yeah...Kano was given a MUCH larger platform than Goro. If you are a fan of the video games you must acknowledge how ridiculous that is. It was purely a writing crutch; you discovered a character that can chew up dialogue and burn through runtime so you just milk him

Oh, and the obligatory post-credits cock tease. Apparently we are supposed to get our dicks hard over Johnny Cage. Thank you for assuring us that one of the main protagonists will be in the sequel. I like Johnny Cage as a pickable character, he has a cool moveset, but his contribution to the lore is mainly his relationship with Sonya and getting her pregnant. In movie form this story thread will surely lead to the same cringe humor that we got from Kano

reply

Ughhh....video game nerds are the worst.

They nitpick every little thing from a source material in which two fighters throw punches and kicks at each other, as if it’s super deep and compelling.

When the movie comes out they whine about the plot, if only it was as award winning and Stanley Kubrick-ish as the video games themselves, we could all be spared from their endless paragraphs for why the movie didn’t live up to the highest of standards.

reply

No we want the film to deliver on the promise of it's premise. I do not care if it is a paper thin plot if you have well choreographed action sequences that are awesome. Unfortunately this movie does not. Want me to give you films with better fight choreography? Enter the Dragon, Police Story, Drunken Master 2, Fist of Legend, IP Man, Ong Bak, The Raid, The Raid 2, The Night Comes For us. Okay I will admit those have a high bar to clear, so lets look at films produced by Hollywood that produce better action. The Matrix, Haywire, John Wick trilogy, Atomic Blonde, and Netflix's Daredevil tv show. All those put this film to shame as far as fight scenes. John Wick and the Raid have paper thin stories, however they excel at what they are promising to deliver. They do it with flying colors. Mortal Kombat does not even do it competently it sucks. So no we expect for it to at least be good. This film had neither good or even competent action, and the story was garbage to boot.

reply

Haywire produced better action? Um excuse me? Atomic blonde?

So let me get this straight, for a movie to be good it has to use a certain fight choreography that can be measured somehow (apparently subjectivity doesn’t exist) and it has to deliver on a promise (self entitled are we?)

Things like dialogue, interesting characters, filming locations, visual effects, comedy, gore, storytelling, story structure, lighting....these things don’t really matter? It’s about delivering on promises and choreographed fight scenes that are measurable?

reply

Haywire did produce better action and so did Atomic Blonde. Yes you heard me correctly. Go ahead attempt to refute that statement.

Where did I say it had to use certain fight choreography? I listed Haywire which is martial arts but is far more grounded with it's fight scenes. The fights in that are actually quite realistic. Then I listed the Raid and other films where the fights are super stylized. Two different ends of the spectrum here. Oh you can logically break down why an action sequence are good or bad. All you have to do is have logical reasoning. Look at the choreography, the editing, the cinematography etc.

Again did I say those things did not matter? You said they criticize a video game where two fighters throw punches and kicks at each other as if the plot is deep or compelling. Sounds to me like you are the one who does not care about plot. I brought up John Wick showing you that it is a simple cliché revenge story. Want to know why it works though because it is structured properly. I was showing you that a simple plot can be done well and fans of Mortal Kombat would be perfectly fine with it if it delivered on this level. This film does not deliver on any level. The fights are bad and the story is even worse. So okay lets say I did not critique the fights, was the story structure good? No it was not. The story is not coherent at all. What made the villains interesting? Kano and Kabal were probably the only interesting villains that had potential. Mileena completely throwaway, Shang Tsung barely had any lines. Why have Cole's character in it? Why create a character for the movie to be the main when Mortal Kombat has a host of other characters to choose from?

reply

Why have Cole’s character in the movie?

Because he is vital to the plot? Because without his character someone else needs to set up the exposition needed to move the plot forward?

They made two simple and very straightforward movies in the 90’s and video game nerds whined about them too, I’m not convinced that this new film could have ever pleased them regardless of what the filmmakers did.

The video game nerds can whine all they want to about these films but at the end of the day they can’t deny that the video games themselves have become overly repetitive and woke.

reply

You can do that same thing with an already established character. That is my whole point he exists just for exposition so why not give that kind of role to a character fans love already?

That is the deal though in the end even though the first film was bad at least it had a coherent plot. Was it any good not really but it was serviceable enough. The issue is again nothing truly excels. If you had fights on the level of John Wick or Daredevil I guarantee you the majority of people would be satisfied. People will complain no matter what is made but the majority would be happy with the result of the film if it delivered on it's promise. Take something like Batman 1989 or The Dark Knight. Do people complain about some elements in each film? Yep but the majority is happy want to know why? They nail down the basics. Compelling story or world, good music production design well cast etc. Mortal Kombat films especially this new one has nothing to offer. Mortal Kombat Annihilation was just an abomination on all ends. From production design, to acting, to editing to fights etc. The new one was at least better than that trash although not a high bar to clear.

What a lazy thing to say. So what does that have to do with making a good film? Films can be good regardless of the genre.

reply

Your definition of what makes a film “good” seems entirely dependent on what the general consensus is. It’s as if subjectivity doesn’t exist.

The Dark Knight pretended that Chicago was Gotham City, that’s hardly nailing it.

Batman (1989) gets Gotham City pretty good but people laugh at the cheap rubber suit which is hardly nailing it.

Some people view movies like math equations that can be measured using science and others view them as art and more subjective. I’m happy to be apart of the latter group.

reply

No it is based off logical reasoning. What is the point of having the character Cole play that part in the story when it easily could have been an established character? Logically explain the reason to do that.

The Dark Knight was going for more grounded realism. For that film it actually fits perfectly. It is not going for the gothic fantasy like Burton films. Could you critique that and not like it? Sure but I never said it got everything perfect. Back to my original point it nailed the essentials. Which is why it got critical acclaim and acclaim by the mass majority. You can have a preference but I judge a film for what it is going for. I judge the film for what it is not for what I want it to be. Mortal Kombat was going for a dark more hardcore film. Where does the film excel? Fight scenes nope, story nope, memorable characters nope. Where does the film excel?

Again flawed yes but it also was a culture phenomenon and got good reception from fans and even decent reception from critics. Something no Mortal Kombat film has ever done.

Films are subjective to a degree but there is logical reasoning as to why you like or dislike something. Saying I hate it or I love it and providing no logical reasons makes your view not credible.

reply

The dark Knight nailed the essentials?

Haha, come on stop trolling. It was a hit with mainstream audiences who never read the comics and didn’t realize that Nolan took a dump all over the source material. But by your logic it was a great movie because other people said it was good. Sorry but that’s middle school logic to my ears.

And for the record John Wick had overly choreographed fight scenes, it comes across as too staged but then again mainstream audiences didn’t notice this so it can’t be true.

Okay so let’s erase Cole from the movie and just use Sonya Blade instead (even though it wouldn’t make a lick of sense). Does that push your D- up to a B+? Of coarse not, you’d still want overly choreographed fight scenes in a movie where fighters can conjure flame dragons (like realism is super important in a video game movie lol).

reply

How did I know you would be one of those people that made this claim?

http://gothamalleys.blogspot.com/2011/08/comic-book-references-in-movies-part-vi.html?m=1

Go ahead and refute that link. It showcases how much The Dark Knight pulled from comic books. People such as yourself simply can't get past that it's a realistic adaption. The long Halloween, Batman Year one are clear inspirations on Nolan's Batman. People complain It is a law and order episode well tons of Batman comics lean heavily into being a crime drama. I have read Batman comics my whole life you barked up the wrong tree.

That is merely a preference. You don't like stylized fight scenes. You didn't break down why it's a flaw. John Wick from the beginning showcases it is not grounded or a film that bases itself on realism. You didn't like the stylized fight ok why is that bad? Explain elaborate.

Your argument is disengenuine. I didn't say if you removed Cole the movie goes up points automatically because of that. I said why not let an established character fill this role? Also I want well choreographed fights regardless of intent. Where did I say the fights have to be realistic? Hmmm is that why I referenced John Wick or The Raid? Those fights aren't realistic they are stylized. Are you honestly this dense or you arguing for the sake of it?

reply

Yeah when I think of the Dark Knight, my first thought is “wow what a great comic book adaptation”. Christopher Colon really captured that comic book feeling to me. If only Mortal Kombat stuck closer to its source material it could have been great. Maybe Christopher Colon can direct the next film and really capture the video game. 🤣

reply

As I thought nothing to retort the link which showcases the links to the comic. Not just images but themes lifted from them. So now the only option you have to attempt to salvage your credibility is be sarcastic. Sorry it didn't work you are dismissed. I'd have more respect if you would actually admit to being wrong. Oh well carry on bud.

reply

I agree with this take, except the last part. I'm beyond the point of caring that every form of art and entertainment is becoming more and more woke. I love art too much to get salty about how our culture is fucking with it. I just accept that I cannot change it and move on and put the work in to find those exceptions to the norm which revitalize my love of the artform

reply

It's really not even "meh." It's actually bad. And I'm a guy who loves action movies and tends to grade them on a curve. Mortal Kombat is not good, or even average, no matter how you look at it.

The 1995 film is actually a well-made film. It's good. It features excellent production design, great fight choreography, a coherent story, a kick-ass soundtrack and, for the most part, good casting.

This movie though has few bright spots.

reply

No this movie was bad and I say that with a heavy heart. The action beats were bad. The only one which was semi decent was Some of Sub Zero's scenes and even then they were just meh. Everything else was bad. You want good fight choreography go watch any martial arts film of old by Bruce Lee, Chan Jet Li, Donnie Yen or if you want some just great fight scenes from Hollywood made films check out the John Wick series, Haywire, Atomic Blonde or the Daredevil tv show by Netflix.

The 1995 film is actually not a good film either but I would much rather watch that than this. Honestly it did have better fight scenes. Story is cliché as hell but it is coherent. Acting is cheese but I agree I like the soundtrack. The best fights in the movie are Reptile vs Liu Kang and Scorpion vs Cage. Everything else was meh or bad. Sonya vs Kano Sucked in both films actually.

The good in this movie? Sub Zero unfortunately not much to work with. Kano, Kabal, and that is about it. It is rated R that is nice.

reply

Yeah, Sub-Zero was handled well, the opening of the movie in feudal Japan was kind of cool, and Kano was pretty good (but should not have turned full-on villain). I enjoyed the first 30 or so minutes of the film but then it just went to shit.

I rewatched the '95 film a few years ago and I like it. The fight between Liu Kang and Reptile is awesome. Robin Shou was a good Liu Kang and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was a great choice for Shang Tsung. And overall it feels relatively faithful to the game aside from the lack of bloody fatalities.

But hey, I love popcorn movies and I'm a defender of Paul W.S. Anderson (even though I'm wondering if his best days are sadly behind him). I also enjoyed Soldier, The Three Musketeers, Pompeii, AvP and the Resident Evil series. Death Race wasn't bad either.

reply

The opening of the film actually was not bad. It was not great it was competent though. It takes a gigantic nose dive off of a cliff after that though.

I think the film was meh for the time but I feel it has aged terribly. I did not like the cliché storyline of having Shang Tsung kill Liu Kang's brother and that it was pg-13. This is Mortal Kombat we are talking about here.

Oh man we could not disagree more here. I can not stand Paul W.S. Anderson films. I think he is a hack director for hire who is only in it for the money. He takes a product and will gladly water it down for the sake of money. His choice of music is always so poser wanna be cool. It only worked for Mortal Kombat. He feels like a 14 year old kid trying to be cool. He thinks nothing about how logical the plot is. AVP I found to be dreadful! I love Alien and Aliens to pieces. The production design on the first two is simply stunning. An iconic female action heroin in Ripley who is not a political statement. AVP is pg-13 again he waters down another franchise. How do you make Alien pg-13? You ever seen the old ones? Predator and Alien were scary a large part because of the gruesome way those creatures kill their victims. AVP also technically looks like crap. It looks like a direct to video film. Why does it look so much worse than the previous films that came decades before it? Look at Blade Runner 2049 that looks stunning you could see they tried to match the technical brilliance of the first. Why does the main lead say you are one ugly mofo to the wrong creature? She says it to the Alien when that is a line that is said to the Predator. Why is the Predator somewhere cold when it is made clear that it likes it hot places in the first two? Doesn't that make it able to see people by their heat? I just hate vs movies. The vs showdown always is disappointing as well.

reply

You’re such a virgin loser, now you’re whining about a PG-13 rating like a middle schooler. Maybe move out of your parents basement and cut the whole “man-child” act?

reply

You lost the debate. Move on.

reply

Hi, my name is moviefanatic505 and I only like movies rated above 7.8 on IMDB.

Christopher Nolan is my hero and his movie the Dark Knight is such a good Law and Order episode oooppss I mean comic book movie, yeah it’s definitely a comic book movie because this one blogger said that it was, so it must be true.

My hobbies include ripping on movies below 7.8 on IMDB and telling everyone how I know that they suck. The only way I can sleep at night is by convincing total strangers that only movies above a 7.8 on IMDB are good movies, because whatever people decide on the internet makes it a fact, well that’s what my two dads taught me any whooo!!!!

reply

Which is why I love movies such as King Kong 2005, Fright Night 1985, Lethal Weapon 1987, Dredd 2012, John Wick, John Wick 2, Atomic Blonde, Haywire, Ong Bak, The Mummy 1999, Drag Me To Hell, Hook, Colossal, Hellboy 2, Superman the movie and many more. All those are below 7.8 on imdb. Keep deluding yourself though. See I unlike you can realize if a movie I enjoy is good or bad. I can defend it with logical reason rather than resort to ad hominem attacks.

Lol yet again I actually told you the comics it was influenced by and based on. The Long Halloween is a crime drama. It is heavily inspired by the Godfather, therefore The Dark Knight being a crime drama is not a stretch for the character. Batman after all is the world's greatest detective. Man who would think a detective would feel a bit like law and order? Next you are going to tell me Sherlock Holmes cracking mysteries is just a total betrayal of the character.

See my list above. When people can't defend a movie with logical reasons it is an indicator the movie is not that good. Just like how you were not able to defend Mortal Kombat 2021 with logical reason. You instead resorted to ad hominem attacks when I listed my reasons on why I did not like the film. This is honestly embarrassing.

Hook? 🤣😂🤣

Dude just stop talking, you’re coming off like an idiot now.

We are done here. Later bud.

Moviefool505 is such an idiot. Argues like a child and sounds like an moron, but looks at his posts and he's like "Yup, I really got 'em'"😂 . Some people just troll, but I actually really think this person has a low IQ or is just very young and dumb, or they are just bad at trolling. Either way, I had to let them know I didn't feel right about debating with them anymore because it really felt like I was picking on a child.

Living in your head rent free lol I love it.

Just look at this fool. He replied to me even though I was replying to your post. So, that means he didn't even get a notification, he's just combing over his old posts to see if someone said something to someone else about him. It doesn't get much more pathetic than that!😂

I am at heart a big fan of popcorn films--pure escapist entertainment--and the action genre is my "home genre," as it were, and so I can vibe with the kinds of films that Paul WS Anderson makes. They're certainly not classics but I don't think that Anderson is under any illusion that he's making classics. They're B-movies, plain and simple. If you think of films like Aliens and Terminator 2 as weighty, nutritious meals, Anderson's movies are cotton candy. But hey, sometimes cotton candy is good.

Does AvP compare well with Alien or Aliens? Of course not. But I can separate the two in my mind and judge AvP on its own merits, regardless of what came before it, and I think it's a fun movie.

Or take Pompeii. Is Pompeii in any way on or even near the level of a film like Gladiator? Not at all. But I still enjoy it for what it is.

Anderson has directed one movie that I regard as irredeemable--his most recent movie Monster Hunter, which totally sucks--but otherwise I think he's all right and there's a place for the kinds of movies that he makes.

reply

The original, while goofy and silly, was INFINTELY more fun! But, this movie was okay for what it was. It was just pretty passionless, and just product, like most of what is made these days.
