Anyone else...

... find the dialogue to be unbearable? When I finished the movie I heard so much about, I thought I must've watched the wrong one. I mean, the animation was great; I loved the character designs. It's just that the story was very simplistic and the dialogue seemed to be delivered in such a corny and funny way. It wasn't profound or compelling in any real way.

This may account for some of my negative reaction, I don't know, but I watched the English dub, because there wasn't a subtitle option on Instant Netflix. Is there a great difference between the dub and original dialogue? I sure hope so.

Would you happen to have any... Ovaltine?

I completely agree. Just saw it in netflix, so obviously dubbed wasn't the best way to do it, but the dialogue was awful. This led the story to not seem compelling or realistic at all (and I've seen my fair share of 'unrealistic' sci-fi/fantasy anime).

For example (and this is just one of many times during my viewing that I was tempted to just turn the whole thing off) what the hell was the uncle doing sitting around eating and talking with the cop robot while his nephew was potentially dead in the fire at the beginning of the movie. The dialogue made it seem like he didn't care or wasn't worried at all.

I really must have seen a different movie than all these other people who say it was 'underrated'. Sure it wasn't a terrible anime and the ending was well done, but much better have gone before and after it.
