Why aren't there any black Amish?

Anyone previous Amish or know why there aren't any Amish of different race than white. Please reply. Just wondering...

The Amish are primarily a german group. People could convert, but they explain in the film that it's not really possible to convert, you have to be born into it. It also explains the fact that they still speak Pennsylvania Dutch (aka German) in Amish communities.

Do they believe in inter-racial relationships?? That might explain why there are no black people...particularly if you have to marry in to become Amish.

I did see a family once who were probably Mennonite (not the same, but similar) with a daughter who was presumably adopted, and looked to be of Pacific/Asian ancestry.

"Come on, pelican!"

any religion or race that doesn't let people to inter-marry are discriminative

I don't think it is about the "race" particularly. It is more about an outsider being able to give up their world and become Amish, it is a major decision. They are a loving and peaceful community, but don't often socialize enough with the outside world to even meet anyone else. I know they do socialize, but not enough to meet an outsider and fall in love with them. Who knows though, crazier things have happened.

"because all the black people are in jail. duh"

unnecessary...

anyway, yes, it's because they all came from the same place and probably don't often adopt (most have no trouble having children...) and they don't inter-marry because it's really really really hard to become amish. it's not a race issue, it's a...seperation issue. the amish are seperate from the rest of the world. and they're white because they came from germany/switzerland in the 18th century.

Some correct things have been said before, I only want to add that the Amish would probably LOVE to broaden their genom, since they suffer pretty badly from inheritable diseases because of their almost incestuous relations. (Don't mean to insult anybody. The point is: This is not ideological, but an unwanted side effect of their cultural isolation.)

Probably because Black People have too much sense to subject themselves to a hardworking, no fun, horrible life. And I didn't see any basketballs.

There have been some Amish sect groups that are all African Americans. They live as the Amish do and shun technology. I believe they are on the outskirts of Illinois. I grew up in Ohio that has the highest population of Amish and I have always had very pleasant relationships with them. They are always surprised that people find them so fascinating.

I've seen black children who were adopted by the Amish. They dressed just like their white Amish counterparts.
