Why cant they just RELEASE it?

It's not like it'll cost them much. And who cares if it doesnt have an ending? They should make it some kind of tribute for River. It was the last movie of one of hollywood's greatest young actors that I read he really loved his role in it and he probably would have liked to see it completed and shown for all of us to enjoy. We just want some footage of him it was his last movie and everyone loved him. they got nothing to lose by releasing this.

I totally agree. The reason they probably won't is because the movie would be nothing without an ending, it would make no sense. In other words they're not going to spend the money and time to release it just so fans of River Phoenix can get a look at his last role on film. It'd be great though.

you mention money. well my way of thinking is that they would probably
make quite a bit of money if they did release it. and they probably
are aware of that fact aswell. so for what other reasons will they
not release it? the first reason is the weakest reason, "it's unfinished" however that hasnt stopped film makers in the past. all you need to do is
look at poltegiest 3 and a string of other films made over the years.
i guess thats a good reason to not complete a film
without its lead actor/actress as "P3" was so scary and disturbing,
however that aside, many people would disagree because they like the
movie and think it is important. i cannot honestly see any good
reason for why they cant justintroduce some desert footage with some nice atmospheric movie music and have a written explaination at the end. Kind of like russ myers''beyond the valley of the dolls' but not in the same theme.
Something appropriate of course.

The thing with film makers is they are closer to genius than what most people would be, keeping that in mind, i dont see any plausible or be it possible
way that they can't just finish it in a well balanced, polished way.
The way i see it; if they sit down and use their heads they can not only finish the film but improve on what they already have. you dont need a lead to do that.
Only someone with little insight into film making and story telling would see other wise. I mean, the director must have some idea by now of what he could
do to the unfinished reel/movie.

However that being said, I think the second reason is not a likely one either.
That being, it may not appeal to river's family. Someone said the director tried to sue river's mother because he died before the film was finished and
it caused intellectually property loss and damage etcetera. So I dont think he's not releasing because of that.

I'm thinking of the third and last reason. Someone in authority has spoken to
the filmaker and has kindly asked or instructed him to not do anything until a further time if any. probably government. because river represents so much
and it may cause some ripples if it is released.

if through.

I entirely agree. It has tremendous value. The director may be seventy three years of age however I believe he still has some good ideas about what shoud be done with the film. He wasn't wasting his time when he made it and it can't just be left in the vault. Sueing River Phoenix's parents is proof he was serious about making the the film aswell; even though sueing is a heavy measure after they lost their son so tragically.. Each film a film maker makes is like a life's work. I still think that he is under the thumb from some higher authority. Which is unfair on the film maker cause he has to take the wrap from the fans for it being not released. The 'stand over men' have alot to answer for if this is the case as the director is an old man afterall. However all things being equal, the plot of the film from what i can gather seems very original and suits no other actor than River Phonenix. The longer the powers that be put the release off the more mysterious the film becomes. I am gratefull I have kept up with some discussion about it. I think being loyal to River is a reward in itself.

I would buy the footage on DVD. Even though it has no end. It is River's last act........

also though, the phoenix family is famously closed-lipped when it comes to even talking about River... I doubt they would be ecstatic about his final film being released... i don't know though.

I, on the other hand, think they would be happy if it was released in a "River Phoenix Tribute" kind of way.

scenes from all his movies (including Dark Blood), as well as interviews with friends AND family and River himself. a cool sentimental music video/videos... some Alekas Attic footage, all on one DVD would be the ultimate Tribute to River and his family.
i would pay a fortune for it!!!

if they aren't going to release Dark Blood as a full movie, then i think they should just release it as it is... in a tribute dvd as i said above.

sound like a good idea?

From some of the clips I have seen on youtube it does look like an interesting movie and his acting is of course very good. I think it might be too emotional for me to watch it knowing it was his last film which was never completed and died while filming some of the final scenes. I was a huge fan and very emotionally distraught when I heard he died. I also have another question if the movie is in the vault as the director said it is how and who got some of the footage that is on youtube. I wouldn't even be sure if the director had the movie since some scenes ended up on you tube or was it him, I just don't know.

What I think that they should do is to animate the missing parts. Bring back Pryce and Davis to record their parts, and someone else to record Phoenix role.

With a charismatic actor such as RP in it - an actor who can no longer make films, 90% of his last film is better than none of it. I wish we all had the opportunity to see his work in this.

Would be interested just to see the footage that was shot. Even in its raw form, with the time/date stamps on it. Unsure if any of it was even edited, or has been...the ten odd minutes or so that have surfaced don't appear to have been.

Releasing it for the public to actually buy would probably be problematic, in terms of making it acceptable for a theatrical run. Wouldn't really want to see it try to be completed with another actor subbing for River, though. It'd be enough if the director (who has retained the film and rights to it) would just cobble together what he could for a dvd release, with the explanation up front that it is an unfinished film. There again, there would be problems with getting financing for production and distribution, because inevitably the temptation to have a mawkish tone attached it ("see River's last film...including the last scenes he filmed right before he died!") would arise.

Maybe some sort of special dvd release...doubt it will happen, though.

I posted this on the George Sluizer-board last month, but I thought it would make more sense to post it here:
I interviewed Sluizer this weekend and asked him about it. The thing is that they were gonna destroy the film, and Sluizer had people actually steal it from the depository. He has the film in his possession now, but if he would release it, he could be sued. He contacted several lawyers. Some of them said it would be fine, others said he would get into a lot of trouble. He thinks it’s not worth the risk, and to leave it as it is for now. Of course he also thinks the whole situation is ridiculous. He told me that filmrights work in a weird way, and he didn’t really know if they can expire.
Anyways, I hope he’ll live to see the release, cause he had an aneurysm two years ago and barely made it through. He had to quit that Rob Schneider movie, but he’s working on a documentary now, though slowly, cause he’s crippled and apparently suffered brain damage (he seemed really clear during the interview though).

Apparently he knew some people at the depository, he didn't really go into detail. It makes sense to me, though. If they were gonna destroy it, it doesn't matter that Sluizer has it, they got rid of it anyways. As long he's not making money off of it, it's ok.
It was an interview for a Dutch website. He received a lifetime achievement-award at a Dutch festival, so that was the reason I interviewed him.

Why don't they get joaquin phoenix to replace him or do a CGI? They could rewrite the ending and do it 15 years later with all of the actors coming back. Heath Ledger died during the imaginarium of doctor parnassus and they had Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Collin Farral replace him.

reply

To be honest, I am a bit curious about why they haven't released the film either. River died in the last few days of filming. The film was almost entirely done. Hmm.. Interesting.
