River Phoenix's Last Scenes:

There is just a few things i want to clear up about Dark Blood. Mainly regarding River's final scene inside the candel lit cave.

Now i have read from a number of articals and sources from the Director George Sluizer and also the Cinematographer Edward Lachman, that the last scene that River Filmed was the scene where River's character (Boy) takes Judy davis's character (Buffy) down to the candel lit cave for a second time to say that the world is coming to an end anyday now it's coming and that (Boy) River's character tells Buffy that he want's to start a new life with her etc.

Now here is what i noticed that scene that i described then that has being written and told a million times by George Sluizer and Edward Lachman and infact by Judy Davis herself, yet in the film that very scene is been voiced-over in the film by the Director George Sluizer. I can only come to 3 reasons why that scene was not in the movie.

First being: They may or may not have completed the scene the way they had wanted too and maybe they couldn't use it becuase it needed editing or voice dubbing etc.

Second being: I have read quite a bit of late that alot of the footage of the film has being damaged over the years and it was maybe unusable in that case, also i have heard that some of the film footage is very scattered and there are bits of material and footage of the film in England and all over Europe that still have not come into the directors hands.

Third being: This is the most unlikley scenario and that is maybe River Phoenix was stoned so badly. Because as you can see the people who have seen it so far there already is a scene in Dark Blood that was filmed in the candel lit cave, and i have being told by Anouk Sluizer that that is River's final scene that River filmed in Dark blood.

To me though if you did not notice that scene in the candel lit cave that we see in the film, finishes rather abrubtly and also i noticed the same with the exteriors that some scenes literally seem to just finish before they have being quite finished, but of course that is understandable considering it is an incomplete movie.

The one thing that excites me though is that there is still footage out there floating around of the movie overseas and all throughout the world especially in Europe , and also if they could just somehow find a way of fixing the damaged reels somehow i think it could feel slightly more complete.

Last but not least the thing that pissed me off the most about the Dark Blood DVD i recieved is that it did not come with any special features, it would have being nice if there were a directors commentary some deleted scens that were not used you know interviews with the cast and crew about there experience working with River and George and maybe a tribute to River on the film like of film stills from the film with music his music playing in the background of it you know something like that would have beena good special feature segments. But hopefully one day the movie gets atleast a limited release and then a major dvd realese so they can add special features as such to you know so it can appeal to more than just the River Phoenix fan or a George Sluizer fan so it can appeal to the casual movie fan.

Anyway thanks for reading this long winded message thanks.

Hi Mike, thank you for the information in this and your previous post. I attended the Miami film festival screening of Dark Blood. There was a question and answer session with the director after the film. Someone from the audience asked why River's final-ever scene was not in the movie. Mr. Sluizer had trouble hearing some of the questions from the audience but he seemed to understand this question. He said that footage was lost. He has no idea what happened to it or where it could be now.

Maybe it's in the hands of a private collector or fan (my speculation). Or maybe someone at the warehouse where the footage was stored for 6 years after River's death did not know what it was and destroyed it. Nobody knows.

P.S. Where did you get a DVD of Dark Blood?! Is it an official release?

I honestly believe that George Sluizer has the footage for himself it's his secret little baby i reckon for him, im talking about the last scene river filmed for dark blood it's not lost it's just an easy thing for people to believe he has it in my opinion its my opinion so i hope no one decides to argue about this.

Could be. But what would be his motive for holding it back? He's very ill and he's 80+ years old; he doesn't have time to play games.
