Question About Deusdete and Zico!

well first of all, NICE MOVIE!

but i didnt really get the part where Zico kills Deusdete, i mean, why would someone kill someone who grew up together and are just like brithers? they vene loved eachother and cared about each other.
and did Deusdete die just because of the Hot water?

and is this movie a true story? i know the doc says that this is the story told by the prisoners, so obviously one sided, but i have heard about the riot that took place in Brazil and it is believed that the police was unfair and brutal... is that true? and if theres any website that can tell me more about this detention center and all the history (including prisoner's) would be great.

Thanks...

kinglestat,

I believe that when Zico kills Deusdete he doesn't really know what he's doing, because he's under effect of drugs. I agree that's strange that hot water is enough to kill Deusdete, but that's another history...

This movie is based on a book, by Drauzio Varella, a famous brazilian doctor that worked at Carandiru, called Estação Carandiru (Carandiru Station). The book website is here http://www.drauziovarella.com.br/carandiru/index.html (Portuguese)
I don't know if there is an English translation.
This is a link about the detention: http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carandiru (Portuguese)

And yes, the police response was unfair and brutal and criticized a lot here in Brazil. The fact happened back in 1992 and is still remembered when there are riots. The prison was completely deactivated in 2002 and most of it was demolished. The place became a park, that will be concluded in 2006.

Well, I hope it helped!

I disagree that the police reaction was "unfair" and "brutal". Those prisoners were cold-blooded murderers who really deserved their fate.

Think about how "brutal" and "unfair" they were to their victims outside jail, in the first place.

I agree fully !

I've been robbed at gun point in Latin America. One time my girlfriend's mom got shot by armed robbers. it's horrible. and the worst part is the helpless frustration you feel because you know the police are worthless. so yeah, watching this movie I had a few problems with the portrayal of these nice, wholesome, family men who also happened to be armed robbers. I can't feel any sympathy for them, honestly.

except... well... gunning down defensless people doesn't fix anything. sorry, it just doesn't. the state should be someone people can trust, and cops who feel free to gun down criminals pretty soon are going to feel free to take bribes and even rob people themselves. it's a vicious circle, and until you get out of it nothing's going to change.

the better thing to do would be fix corruption at all levels of government, but that's a slow and painstaking process, not nearly as sexy as vigilante killings.

That part of the film shocked me also, 'cause I never expected it.
And Zico's murder... even worse...

But like another poster said, Zico was on drugs, so...

Such a sad film...

A murder is a murder. What you say is just plain stupid.

First of all, one thing doesn´t justify the other. And its not up to us to decide other people´s fate.
Second, hot water realy kills its very much known around poor comunities around here (SP Brasil)

In the book from Drauzio Varella, Zico became angry when Deusdete yelled at him for using drugs in front of another friend of Zico... During the night, he killed Deusdete...
The "hot water" execution were used a quite few times in Carandiru. They used to boil the water and then pour it on the victim while he's sleeping. The person doesn't die instantly. The person goes through an immense pain, taking some minutes to die. In case of Deusdete, he died on his way to the emergency room. Salt and oil are other ingredients added to the water for this purpose.

The "janitors" (actually it's a long story to explain what they do, but let's say... nothing must not happen without their consentment) debated on the next day and concluded that Zico would die. A group of prisoners stood in the entrance and followed Zico upstairs while the other group stood in the first floor to prevent him from escaping (according to the book).

The book is not fictional, although it preserve the prisoners' identities. It's a serie of stories, some where told by the prisoners (like the Massacre in 1992), and some the doctor takes an active part in the story. Too bad it's not translated, because it's a excellent book (there are a lot pictures taken from the prison and it's surroundings in the book). There are also some stories in the movie that are not the same as the book.

bye :)
