How come Hank didn't...

...recognise his fathers car when he dropped Hank & Andrews mother off at the jewelry store?

reply

He tucked his head down low when he assumed his mom's friend was driving up and there was a truck obstructing a view of the car before Hank could realize it was his parent's car.

I was wondering the same thing. He clearly looked out the window and saw it was his parents' car...that's how he knew to duck in the first place! It made no sense. They should've had the mother arrive to work PRIOR to the two robbers getting there, then everything would've made sense. I also don't get why the movie never showed the moment the two brothers came to realize their mother had been shot. That seems like a pretty important fact/scene to glaze over, and it could've been very interesting to watch as they realized what they'd done.

They do. Remember when they was in the hospital and ask the clerk about their father Charles because they think he was the one who wounded, but than the clerk tell them about Nanette their mother.

It's kind of strange, because Hank said that his father called him, so why he think that Charles was the one who gets hurt?

reply

Oh yea...I just rewatched this movie tonight and caught the hospital part this time. But I'm still beyond bothered by the fact that Ethan Hawk didn't recognize his own father's VERY recognizable forest green Lincoln Towncar pulling up to drop off their mother and then driving right by him as he leaves. It's such an absurd thing to overlook. Kind of ruins the movie for me.

Same here.

Going by what we observe about this character throughout the film it's easy for me to imagine why. Hank is a spineless mess. Can't say no to his brother. Can't adapt and figure his way out of pressure situations. Can't stand up to anyone or anything. Etc.

His coconspirator (not his brother -- I think "Bobby?") was already angry and committed to the task so Hank would never pull the plug on it (let alone having to deal with his brother Andy if he didn't go through with it), he was just hoping in all likelihood that things would go smoothly. Duck down. Grit your teeth. Hope nothing goes wrong . . .

The strange thing is, it wasn't even necessary to show Ethan & his coconspirator sitting in the parking lot at the same moment his mother was dropped off. The movie would've worked just fine had the mother been dropped off prior to Ethan arriving to the strip mall. It's just such a bizarre scene not only because it makes no sense but also because of the huge UPS truck sitting there as if it has some sort of significance. Were we supposed to think it blocked Ethan's view of who was being dropped off? I didn't get it. Regardless of whether or not Ethan was able to see who exited the car, he knew whose car it was so it's pretty easy to assume! Yet he acts genuinely surprised at the hospital when he learns that his mother was the one who'd been shot.

Also going back to the UPS truck: The UPS driver just left the box outside of the business which I'm pretty sure doesn't happen IRL at business addresses! Just one more thing about that scene that didn't ring true. Imagine the amount of retail merchandise that would potentially get stolen if they actually did that.

Thanks for the thoughts. I'll have to watch that film again soon and pay close attention. Doubtful I'll have any new insights but if I do I'll come back and share.

Hank was a complete mess during this moment and nervous about being caught. I purchased this several weeks back on Blu Ray.. It's very well done but sort of a downer of a movie..
