What's the deal with the ending? Spoilers.

Well, the professor in the court said that she needed some kind of event to resolve things and let her live a normal life. She managed to save him from the car fire, and, since his wife died in a car crash when he was driving, and they both survived this crash at the end of the film, perhaps he can 'let go' too.

I thought it was a hopeful ending, suggesting some kind of cycle was broken.
