It is a wonderful movie indeed, one of my favorite all the time... it surprised me a lot... I am argentinian too so I understood all the jokes and I must confess I couldn't stop laughing and felt emotional at the same time, and I am happy to see this sort of things coming up from my country. Too bad it took me 6 years to discover it. :(

I am not fan of argentinean movies. I haven't had good experiences with most of them. But "El hijo de la novia" really got me. It is a very touching and tender film. Also funny at times.

The Oscar was given to Bosnian movie "No man's land", not even close to this.
I dunno. "No Man's Land" is a quite powerful war drama.
Actually that year the competition was pretty strong. Besides "No Man's Land" and "El Hijo de la novia", you had also "Elling", a well crafted norwegian comedy. "Lagaan" one of the finest indian movies that I've ever seen, the best of Bollywood in the last 15 years.
And finally you had "Amélie", which IMO was the best movie that year and deserved the Academy Award.
Anyway "El hijo de la novia" it's a fine movie and deserves all its accolades and awards. share
