What killed the show

They killed off, or removed every core character. If Claire, Tess, Alex, Nick, & all strong/core characters that the audience loved. By doing this the show was doomed to fail the episode that Claire died and they spt the series on this road to doom!

I loved the show, and expected to see Claire had died in Tess' dream and would be back. It seemed like the writers wanted this show to fail.

What a shame, after such a strong start with an excellent base plot.

I have been trying to which after Claire died but it seems to be getting more. & more far fetched.

I absolutely love this show, up to the point where Claire dies. I couldn't believe it when they killed their main character. Claire IS Drovers Run, and the show don't work at all without her, IMO. I think that's really sad, because it was such a great series.

The writers killed the show. I agree with the above posts...after Clair died....it just sucked from then on. I've never seen a show kill off all their main characters like this one. No wonder actors wanted to leave!

In hindsight, Claire's departure killed the show - that much is obvious. Lisa Chappell wanted Claire to quit the show though, not the writers. To be frank I don't think if they had the choice they ever would've gotten rid of her. There's a couple of quotes from an article online about Lisa's departure that I think are interesting:

“It’s not Magnum, PI”, Lisa says. “IF Magnum, PI left, that would be a problem. This is an ensemble cast—and it’s an incredibly talented one.”

Judging this at face value Lisa didn't realize how much the show would suffer without her.

Lisa has talked about leaving McLeod’s Daughters since last year, so the writers have had plenty of time to work her departure into the storylines. There won’t be any sudden disappearance, with other characters left to explain that Claire has moved interstate, as has happened in other shows.

Especially the bolded part - that reminds me exactly of how a lot of the later characters departed: quick and random. I honestly think the writers on this show did their best  but with so many actors departing (some of which might've stayed if Claire had remained on the show) what were they going to do?

I've only seen season one but Becky is my favorite character so far. I was really disappointed to find out that she's leaving in season three. I know that Claire (another character I really like) leaving was the main reason for the decline but I wonder if Becky leaving didn't help either.
