In hindsight, Claire's departure killed the show - that much is obvious. Lisa Chappell wanted Claire to quit the show though, not the writers. To be frank I don't think if they had the choice they ever would've gotten rid of her. There's a couple of quotes from an article online about Lisa's departure that I think are interesting:
“It’s not Magnum, PI”, Lisa says. “IF Magnum, PI left, that would be a problem. This is an ensemble cast—and it’s an incredibly talented one.”
Judging this at face value Lisa didn't realize how much the show would suffer without her.
Lisa has talked about leaving McLeod’s Daughters since last year, so the writers have had plenty of time to work her departure into the storylines. There won’t be any sudden disappearance, with other characters left to explain that Claire has moved interstate, as has happened in other shows.
Especially the bolded part - that reminds me exactly of how a lot of the later characters departed: quick and random. I honestly think the writers on this show did their best but with so many actors departing (some of which might've stayed if Claire had remained on the show) what were they going to do?
