Good riddance ...

... to the ultra-annoying Wil Anderson and his constant leftist drivel.

Seriously, the man has taken John Howard-bashing to such tiresome lengths that he's become a parody of himself. I doubt even Philip Adams would find him funny. Every year at the Melbourne Comedy Festival ... three seconds into his act and it's: "John Howard's a poo-head! Ha ha ha ha! And Amanda Vanstone's FAT! And you know what? George W. Bush is an idiot!! Ha ha ha ha ha! Look at me, I'm so cutting edge! Ha ha ha!" I exaggerate, of course, but that's not very far below the usual level of his "satire."

Though I agree that Will Anderson stopped being funny a long time ago (it seems that the celeverer he seems to think he is the dumber he gets) thats not the point. The Glass House was recieving it's highest ratings yet and was still, despite Anderson, a good show. It was axed due to political censorship, pure and simple, and that is just plain outrageous. Wether or not you liked the show, what has happened here is a horrific thing

anderson is as funny as a burning orphanage...

regardless of that.... basic civil and social rights have been shat on

reply

So what if he's a leftist, he's bloody halarios! As long as he's not a communist, I love him!

reply

I think you missing the point.
It was that the abc axed on of its best rating shows at the peck of its ratings. I mean the glasshouse had a huge fan base (even if you didnt like it)
Its just all a bit weird that they axed it.
Its not about wil or corinne or dave its about how suss all of this is and the fact that the abc wont tell anyone why they did it.
If you didnt like it thats your bussiness but i really think that you should think your comment through before posting it for the world to see.

reply

wtf?

Wil Anderson is *beep* hilarious.

So what if he's politically biased, your probably not his target audience anyway.

And it dosent matter if he says these things over and over again; its still funny everytime.

reply

I think Wil Anderson's funny. I like political related humour

Wil Anderson hasn't been funny since last year, Corrine Grant has never been funny, and even Hughesy is starting to loose it. Better they cancel this show now while they can still walk away with some dignity.

There are multiple monkeys in my pants.

reply

Individually the three of them may have their comedic shortcomings (Corrine Grant especially. Never Funny. Ever.), but as a package the show worked.

Saying it's "Leftist" is a cop-out and frighteningly American.

It's a bit a outrageous, the circumstances in which it has been axed.

Tonight's show was terrific, even if a bit somber at the end, understandably.

reply

The point of political satire/comedy is to mock those in power. Dont like it deal with it.

You sound very armerican with this 'leftist drivel' crap. The show rips on everything, just not Howard. IF and i mean IF Kim or anyone other political was in power they would be equally ripping on them to.

Not by much, though. It's a little disconcerting that there are those who actually think this is intelligent, and as you say, cutting edge. I have no problem with people liking it (although I don't), but I suspect many claim to like it strictly for the credo it gives them. It's cool to be 'informed', although there's nothing remotely informative about the physical abnormalities of Australia's politicians.

I heard somewhere that Anderson was once a political journalist for the Age (or similar). You'd expect more insightful commentary. Leftist humour is, almost be definition, a self-parody now-a-days.

I found very little that was satire. I did find most of it funny though anyway.

I hate to burst the consipirators' collective bubble, but the Glass House wasn't axed because of the bias crackdown, certainly not censorship.

I have it from a very good source that the possibility of the Glass House's contract not being renewed - i.e. its axing - had been tabled as early as the start of last year ('06), certainly before all the hubbub about ABC bias. It was partly a budgeting thing, but also because the ABC thought it'd really run its course, it was good to go out on a high point, and that it leaves room for new and fresh Australian comedy.

That's all. It is a real loss though - none of the commerical stations really have any shows with the guts of Glass House, save perhaps SBS.

P.S. Those who would call the Glass House "leftist" have a possibly warped point of view for sure, it seems anyone with distinctly right views are inclined to place anything that challenges or disputes their narrow-minded view of the world into the category "leftist", ala that Concetta Feveretti-Wells. Calling that American is sadly inaccurate, since the USA has laws protecting free speech. Anyway, I hardly think that a comedy show is likely to lead a communist revolution.

2001-2006 is a very good run. And how many shows get a reaction to cancellation like it did? It was loved.

I think it's shows though, a certain type of thinking about John Howard. We could believe he would axe something he doesn't like.

reply

Will Anderson was funny on occasion, Corinne was alright i suppose but is it just me or is Dave Hughes delivery really annoying, that long errrrr he ALWAYS does when he's trying to think of a joke. Does my head in, and besides that the joke he comes up with isn't really that funny nine times out of ten.

So i'm pretty glad they axed it , more chaser's i say.

reply

i have to say I LOVE WIL ANDERSOn
i think he can be very funnii, when he is not trying to hard
has anyone else noticed that when he does stand up he goes reallii red in the face and sweats alot liek he has just gone for a logn run or something

i do like hughesy but he isn't high up there for me anymore
hes personality is great he just isnt delivering the jokes anymore

corinne grant was never funny
maybe she should have stayed on rove? then she would still have a job

it is terribly sad that the glass house has been axed
ONE DAY i am going to buy my own tv channel jsut so i can put them back on the air

wont have the same effect then though
oh well
i can dream cant i?

reply

agreed.

and ill work with you.

it can just be all the good shows that have been axed...on a loop..lol

shame that good shows get axed...while crap ones are still on....

reply

Isn't it said that the creator of `We Can Be Heros' is making something to fill the void?

reply

I have heard that chris lilleys new show (summer heights hill) will be filling it....

I dont know...

You know what i heard though....

That ted robbinson..(producer of the glasshouse and many other shows) is making a new panel show out of melbourne)

Thats a bit slack why didnt he just move the glasshouse to melbourne?

but its just a rumor

reply

the new show by ted robinson was not a new show at all
it was just good news week

which got axed in 1999 i think... maybe 2000? and is now back on

good show though

as for summer heights high
while i loved that show, its not really comparable to the glass house.
and now that its over what is the ABC going to do?
they are once again lacking shows i want to watch
