What's this about?

Uhm... wondering what this is about since there's no synopsis or summary. It was recommended by my friend, but she refuses to say what it's about.

It's about very dirt poor Filipino villagers. It shows a lot of people wearing only one layer of clothes and no panties and men are only wearing shorts that leaves you nothing for imagination.

It is a very repressed society. The women are horny but they don't know how to come to terms with their sexual desires. The main male character is a brutal, sexist, and moody person. He wants to have sex with all the girls in the village. The girls are guilt ridden because sex is supposed to be something of a shame or something. I am not a Catholic or Christian Fundamentalist so I don't know what that is all about.

But there is fair amount of brutality, sex abuse, peeping toms, naked women (including the then Miss Philippines herself), violence, animal killing, vagina, breasts, rape, confused and neglected children, a few shots of penises including an erection towards the end, backstabbing, S&M (not the soft one done voluntarily for sexual pleasure), gang rape, sacrifice, burning women alive...etc. I didn't tell you the plot outline for spoiler prevention but I only gave you clues as to plot keywords so you have a general idea of what you are getting into.

Your friend was right in not telling you what the movie was about because it is really difficult to categorize it. This is certainly now became a form of Asian cult cinema. But watch it only if you are somebody who isn't afraid of exploring cinema of different period in different cultures. You will hate it or love it. Find out yourself. I won't recommend if all you do is watch mainstream movies like some people I know. In that case, I can tell you, don't waist your time even if you already got the movie from your friend for free.

For me, I found it interesting. I don't say it is the best movie I have ever seen but definitely different and unique. Mine is in Filipino/Tagalog with English Subtitles. I have also seen the dubbed version with Greek Subtitles. I found the voice characters in the dubbed versions to be extremely annoying and lacking spirit that totally didn't match with the climax of the movie. I can't stand stupid and annoying dubs.
