Good

This game is good. I had it on Nintendo 64. I remember i really liked the intro. The music and guy who say he is name is Legion. I remember this line "For we are many".

this one is the most psichotic game I've ever played.
I bought it in late 99 but it was too difficult and too scary for me (I was 14 years old by then).
So 2 weeks ago I came across it and decided to give it a try. I beat it 3 hours ago.
Now that I read all the documents from the inventory and completely understood the story, I must admit it's one of the best stories I've ever seen on a game.

Another great aspect of the game are the levels. Who ever came up with this f u cked up game is my hero. I still remember the music of the Playrooms: torture chambers with a soundtrack of children playing and crying and duckies squeaking. The other level that really stayed in my mind was the prison riot.
The Asylum levels in general are great.
The problem is that the first levels you see in the game, Bayou Paradise, Marrow Gates and the Wasteland, are not interesting at all so it tends to make you want to avoid the game instead of continue playing and discover the really great levels ahead.

Anyway there are much better reviews of the game out there so I recommend you take a look at them.

Someone should make a movie about this game.

The best Horror game ever created. A film should be made, but properly, not like the resident evil series, (though they were fun). This film if ever made, should not be restricted to a 15 certificate. That would ruin it. The game is brilliant, very scary in some places. There are so many references to the film Apocalypse now, such as the vietnam killer, who has the theme tune playing, and even quotes from the film. The sheer size of the game is incredible. The file on the five lead killers, is an amazing read, and the entire game fits together. challenging in some places. 10 out of 10.

There was talk about producing a Shadow Man movie when the game was first released, though I don't think anything happened beyond a few people sitting around saying "wouldn't it be good if..?". Who knows what will happen now. As far as I know, the IP rights still belonged to Acclaim when they went bankrupt last year. While the physical assets of the company have been auctioned off, IP rights to several games remain unsold.

The game was downright twisted in places, but the released version was toned down due to a post-Columbine violent-games-are-bad-mmmkay knee jerk reaction. If I recall, one of the cells in the Playrooms level had people pinned to the ceiling with various surgical instruments. This was judged a step too far, and they were hastily removed - merely by deleting the texture maps, leaving the objects invisible. If you shoot the ceiling, it bleeds because you're actually hitting the bodies. This is the case for the PC version; it was fixed for Dreamcast.

There were two additional levels that were cut from the final game due time constraints. If you've seen the Dark Engine, two of the six pistons are missing, which mark where the missing levels would have converged from.

It was a good game, but did take a while to get into, and was perhaps more of a thinker than many gamers were expecting.

A lot of interesting info, Pootle5. Thanks for sharing I don't think I ever noticed that about the missing pistons on the Dark Engine.

By the way, those people pinned to the ceiling made it into the sequel.

I've always thought a film version of Shadow Man could work, though I imagined Lawrence Fishburne as Mike (that's the thinner Mike from the original game mind you, not the completely unexplained Ving Rhames overhaul Mike took in Shadow Man: 2econd Coming).

I'm a huge fan of the Shadow Man series, but I doubt we'll ever see another game. I don't believe Shadow Man: 2econd Coming sold very well. It's a shame...

I was given a N64 a few weeks back and bought this game off of ebay for $.99 + $4 shipping! What a cheap purchase and what a game! I am new to the 64 and it takes time, but is fun as hell....
