the dog *spoilers*

I'm not sure that the old man was leaving with his dog. Remember his eye sight is appalling. Was the man who sold the dog telling the truth when he said "This dog is called rat and was born here". I believe he may have been. Do you think The old man actually killed his dog when he ran him over (not instantly) and the man helping him find his dog knows this but just wants him to be at peace?
