R.I.P. Creativity

I seen the trailer for this film. And the makers of this won't see a cent of my money. I guess that is why God created morons and novices. So they can make up for people like me (LOL). This movie is based on a story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and it is a story that has been beaten into the ground all too many times (I assume you know the title of the story). Vain jerk vs. Vain jerk. And the prize.....a social climbing Whore.

I haven't been to the movies in ages. Why should I go? With remake after remake, and movies based on books, I guess Hollywood is telling me to go to Blockbuster, and then go to the library.

There are millions of you people on the internet reading this. If you any ideas for a movie, please, please, please get a scholarship to film school. People like me need to see fresh ideas, and I haven't seen one since 1998.

By the way, my posting reminds me of a good song made by The Clash called Train in Vain. It is "the anti-Great Gatsby song." I think I am going to go listen to that song for a while so I can cheer up.

Consider the following:
People will continue telling the stories they want to tell, in the manner they wish to tell them; perhaps with creativity and originality or perhaps not.
And you, you can go eat s h i t and die slow.
How about that? This way, everyone wins.

reply

You have to realize that people will say things you don't like, or things won't go your way. Toughen up, because if internet folk will upset you, then you are in terrible mental shape.

reply

I haven't been upset in 15 years.

While I am also sick of the same story being told over and over, I do like it when a film maker puts his own spin on a story. I like the hip hop element of this film and I will probably see it with a couple girlfriends. Plus, pretty much every story has been done - it's almost impossible not to have repeats. I also have never read The Great Gatsby but I will before I see this movie so I can make comparisons.

reply

Well to my taste, I always thought The Great Gatsby was a morally corrupt, inane, non-sensical story. Not to ruin it for anyone, but I suppose one would read it for themselves. And on top of that, there have been many movies loosely based on The Great Gatsby. But people may see it because there is a hip-hop twist to it, but I would seriously advise against it.

reply

OK, that sounds better than your first post.
The first post you sounded like you were whining

"I would seriously advise against it."

Why advise against a film you haven't even SEEN?

I saw this on the festival circuit years ago and I thought it was a *great* movie. It went in directions I didn't expect and it's not just Gatsby shot with Black folks.

This was the last movie I saw that had me telling EVERYONE I KNEW about it. What's sad is that it's now taken 3 years for it to go into general release so I have to remind people, "This is the movie I told you about YEARS ago...you can see it know."

Why advise it? Because I have seen it. I am sorry, I meant to type I have read the book. And I didn't like the book. So therefore, I seriously doubt I would like the movie. And as to why people shouldn't see it. Well, read the book. Let's promote literacy.

reply

It seems precisely as creative as hip-hop. Just instead of profiting by sampling from immensely better songs by far more successful artists, this movie is riding on literary coattails and hoping to cash in by stealing plot elements from a decent if not dated book of some renown.

Interesting that Fitzgerald is not credited because the book does not move into the public domain until 2020. This movie sat on the shelf for 3 years - always an excellent sign. It probably should have stayed there until its own copyright expired...in 2101.

Anyone who goes to see this is crazier than Zelda herself. Even the title is unoriginal: remember "O", the updated "street" version of Othello a few years back. What's next? "A", the South Central retelling of the Scarlet Letter.

Here's a letter for you: F.

Take it any way you like. Couple it with any other letters you want. It is still the grade I would give this project if someone handed me the outline for it.

(If you have no idea who Zelda is, you are not informed enough to be discussing this topic and your comments will be ignored.)

reply

lmfao.

Seriously, please people, enroll in film school, send in scripts, do something. This is getting to be frightening. Now we have TV shows based on older TV shows (Night Stalker (currently on the air), Kolchak: The Night Stalker (on the air during the 70's)). I am sorry to constantly kill people that want to tell stories, but someone needs to step up here and take command of Hollywood.

Indastrucktable, if can't understand the point of The Great Gatsby maybe you shouldn't be talking about creativity.

reply

I am going to assume you meant "if I couldn't understand the point of The Great Gatsby, maybe I shouldn't be talking about creativity."

Anyway, I understood the point of the book. I just hated the way F. Scott Fitzgerald reached that point. To me, it was shallow and pointless.

reply

How so? The only shallow characters are those meant to be shallow to reinforce the point, Gatsby himself amongst them.

reply

Well for starters, there were so many ways to tell the world that rich people are as or more messed up than the average folk. But thats my opinion. There isn't a main character in the book that I liked (Gatsby included). And that is why I don't like the book too much. I have to have a character too root for for me to like a book. But I will say this.

Although I hated the character of Daisy Buchanan, I loved the way she developed. I liked how Fitzgerald portrayed her as a innocent person, then she slowly morphs into someone who is selfish.

reply

Damn, I am a genius. I still haven't seen this crap movie.

reply

I agree with you Kellichu22 especially your basic dramas like these. Just put something new on it- make other obstacles, put new character with obstacles, change there past and characteristics. To the first poster if saw the movie you'll know Sky,lead actor, is not a whore. Although no character is totally innocent, you'll probaly feel for one or more. I seem to like the bad guys though.

reply

The movie was excellent. If one do not like the movies that are out, well you can "MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE" as the great director Lloyd Kaufman would say. That is what I am doing right now. Making movies and screening them. The money stays in my pocket, not hollywood's or a distributor's pocket. None of my movies have taken a lost. And may I add, I still use 16mm motion picture film stock and not video. No HD 24P or Mini Dv for me. Pure film......

Most movies are remakes of remakes "or/and" from books & the remakes are getting worser & worser except for a chosen few. I just posted about how pathetically "unrealistic" this movie was & I can understand why it took so long to go to DVD. The ones that heard about how crappy & disappointing the ending was by viewers who seen it in the theater had time to forget about it by now & obviously this is what Sony was hoping so they could bank on DVD sales & rentals. Have u seen whats in the DVD rental stores lately? It's like Hollywood is getting awfully desperate & everyone & "anyone" is rushing to make films on DVD being that's where the money is at. The young manager at my rental store just got her scholarship for film making & left to L.A couple months ago & he feels the same way u & I do so hopefully she's one of them that will make a difference in the future.

Great posting! BTW, I just read a posting where somone blasted me for blasting this movie by saying "make your own damn movie!!!!" That person is right, I should make my own movie. I think everybody should make their own movie. I just wish that message would have reached the producers of this movie (LOL).

As for the young woman you mentioned that is going off to film school, congratulations! I hope this woman can make an impact.

More storytellers. Less Xerox machines (like the people that made this film).
