Good Idea, Bad Movie (Includes Spoilers)

This is my first post on IMDB,(so forgive any spelling mistakes) but I just watched this movie last night, and thought it was total crap! It really irritated me enough to post a comment. First off, you KNOW what's going to happen from the opening sequence. When you see "Summer G" walking along the beach covered in blood, I knew the girl was going to die without knowing a thing about the story. Or if she didn't die, then maybe they would pull a move like on Jason's Lyric where you thought she died, but they run off into the sunset togeter. N.E.Wayze, that kind of spoiled the rest of the movie knowing something like that was going to happen. Very predictable. At least give us some type of surprise ending, an half-way decent twist to keep the story interesting.

Secondly, I thought the girl was a total ditz. I mean, she cheated on Summer G, and ended up with a semi-abusive, womanizing rich boy, and Summer was still kind enough to take her sorry behind back. The man was willing to give up everything he built for her, and she dumps on him again. I thought her character (and her acting) were questionable so untimatly I didn't feel any sorrow for her.

Lastly, I was consfused as to why Craig came shooting up the party anyway! What the hell was that about??!! Was he trying to shoot his girl (don't remember if she was there) trying to shoot G? What was the goal?

As you can tell, I really didn't like much about the movie. I thought the acting was mediocre at best, and they ruined a potentially great story. On a good note, I did think Blair Underwood and Rich Jones did a nice job. And I thought the little side story of "B MO" and Sonja was cute. Other than that it was a waste of two hours of my life! Again.. Just my opinion, but I'm curious to see what others thought. :)

Bad Movie. Bad acting. I agree. Perhaps it should have just been released as a television movie to just check out on a lazy weekend home alone. No quality here, and a total waste of Blair Underwood's talent.

I did like this movie.I do agree that the first scene gave the ending to the movie which ruined my anticipation, but I did like the movie. You saw Summer G walking the coast with bloody clothes and Chip getting out a black limo, ( according to my memory) dressed in black, while others are also in black. It looks like a funeral and his wife is not beside him. Process of elimination Sky Hightower was killed. You could have thought of the other main character Tre, but just by seeing the preview it wasn't a motive to kill him. But I LIKE THE MOVIE "G".

I bought this movie, and I was really disappointed and want my money back. Right from the beginning of the movie, I knew how it was going to end, and some of the characters were just off the wall. Can someone clear this up for me, though? At the end, where they're showing the picture of the girl at the funeral, was that Sky or was that Chip's mistress? One of my guy friends who watched the movie said that it was the mistress and that Sky's whereabouts were unknown, even though in the previous scene, it was clear that Sky was shot.

The movie was excellent compared to other films that people like which is garbage. I thought the acting was great and so was the story. A lot of movies starts off like that, so no big deal.

I totally agree w/ "msreeta-1" 100%, the one who started this thread. It just came out on DVD my son & I just watched it last night. First of all what man in the entertainment world of rapping would even have a girlie name like Summer, worst yet...USE IT?! The broad was an idiot & what was up w/ the hair do?! Other then all this we managed to get off into the movie UNTIL the crappy ending which ruined the whole damn thing. WTF kind of ending was that, is all I want to know? The wrong person was doing the shooting AND he smoked the wrong person. Then to top it off Summer ended up holding the dying sorry-excuse for a woman when it should have been her husband! Where the hell was he at?! This movie was so pathetically unrealistic that it's unbelievable any known actors would play in it. Aklso, it was only obvious that Blair cut his mistress loose in front of his wife so his wife would cut her lover(Summer) loose & he could set Summer up in front of the police. Blair's role was the bad-guy in the movie yet he ended up coming out on top b/c he ended up getting the freedom to cheat w/ his wife out of the way...soooo, that was one hell of a crappy ending & it leaves the viewers w/ a bad after taste & shaking their head. I'm not the least bit surprise it took so long to put it out on DVD being it's only logical that the feed back was crappy right after the movie came out. They knew if they gave people time to forget about it they'd have a better chance at raking in more DVD viewers.

I totally agree w/JailLess1-1 & msreeta-1. The beginning of the movie spoiled the ending for me. It was a real waste of time for the talents of Blair & Richard. It's sad that Blair can't get any good movie roles anymore considering he's a great actor regardless of playing the good or bad guy. Richard T. Jones is F-I-N-E! I love the "brooding" characters he usually plays and to be honest, he was the only REAL reason I rented the DVD. The movie was too predictable and was confusing mixing hip-hop sterotypes with ridiculous names (SUMMER G???). When the manager came in the room calling out "Summer", for a second I thought he was looking for a woman...LOL.

Anyway, if you're a fan of Blair or Richard, rent the DVD. Otherwise, wait for cable...which should be REAL SOON!

reply

"girlie name like Summer, worst yet...USE IT?!"

Well Master P's name is Percy Miller which IMO is almost as bad. Also Sean "Puffy" Combs isn't the most masculine name either and it was said that was who "G" was based on. That's how the critics spinned it anyway.

"Lastly, I was consfused as to why Craig came shooting up the party anyway! What the hell was that about??!! Was he trying to shoot his girl (don't remember if she was there) trying to shoot G? What was the goal? "

He was there to shoot his girlfriend. I think that was just bad directing on the directors part. He spent too much time trying to make you believe "G" was the one that was going to get shot that it makes everything look confused and makes you not even know what the hell he was shooting at.

As far as the movie goes you guys are good viewers because after seeing the Great Gatsby with Robert Redford I just assumed the character of G in this film had got shot and was walking the beach and was planning to die. The fact that the girl was the one who died took me by surprise. I will say though that the opening sequence did keep me asking myself "Wow so who shot G?" throughout the whole movie and I never could really come up with a answer. Blair Underwoods character was too obvious to do it.

Anyway, I thought it was a good film all in all. Thought the script was ehhhh but for a rent it was a good film. There are a couple of flaws here and there but no ones crying out Oscar. Its definately a plus for Hollywood. I think the film could've been better with a different director and writer. Not that these guys were bad but they did a real mediocre job. I thought the acting was okay. Far from bad but far from great as well.

reply

I agree with msreeta-1, the initial scene ruled out any suspense to this movie.

"Mediocre" would describe this production, at best. I will not call the movie, total crap, because I enjoyed the story line.

I saw this movie Thursday, I hated it too, it was dumb, everybody basically brought out every thing wrong with the movie, I wish black people didn't always feel like they have to use profanity when doing a movie, I understand being realistic, blah blah blah, but that's NOT necessarily how blacks talk, and it's just not the profanity, but it seemed like they used profanity just for the sake of using it, at times, there was no need to use the "F" word, but they used it just to use it. The "F" word was used as an adjective for just about everything.

It was bad writing and bad directing, profanity doesn't have to be used in every sentence, every line, every time.

Blair Underwood did waste his time with this film, but it only prepared him for Madea's Family Reunion, which was not a waste of time.

One more thing, the guy that played the main character, did he not look little like Malik Yoba?

And the guy who (with the girl) wanted to do a solo album (the girl wanted to sing), did he not look a lot like Mekhi Phifer? I wonder if that's who they were trying to get to do that role and wasn't able to, so they chose this guy.

reply

I am like everyone else. I can't get pass the name. Summer G? I was expecting a female.

The setting did not fit the characters or the plot. The same storyline could have worked in any large city. That would have been more fitting. Hip Hop trying to infiltrate the bourgeoisie? I wasn't feeling it.

Skye? I ain't saying she's a golddigger....

Oh! Somebody help me. What was the deal with "Chip" and the black panties at the bid whist game? What was the purpose of him taking them out of his pocket when he got home? Did I blink and miss something?

reply

OMG, I just saw the part about the black panties. The chick (his mistress) managed to magically wiggle out of them, pull them down her legs, scrunch them up in her toes, lift her leg up to get to Chip across the table, pass them into his crotch for him to take them. All under a glass table. With no one noticing. Yeah.

reply

I agree...the opening scenes spoiled it for me to.

The movie was just ok, but could have been better IMO

reply

Totally agree. There's nothing worse than a movie with a lot of potential that just fails.
I wish they would have spent more time on Summer and Skye's love affair. All they told us was that they broke up for some ambiguous reason, they had sex, then reconnected in some marketplace for about two and a half seconds. The next thing you know she was back with her man. I would have felt more for the characters if we could have seen that relationship, flashbacks or something!
Skye is killed by the lunatic? Was his girlfriend there or not? It would have been better if anyone else had killed her like, the woman that Blair was cheating with when she magically appeared, or what if blair and G got into some scuffle and she got shot? It would have made much more sense.
And what about the cousin who ended up in the middle of all of this nonsense? Eliminate him and the whole story never happens.
The Hip Hop themed crap was also boring. Must we always center our dramas around some iced out hip hop garbage? Jones wasn't even convincing as this character he would have made a better actor, shoot he would've passed better as a magician damn near!
Very clumsy, half-hearted adaptation if you ask me.

well lwt me be the diffrent one and say i loved this movie, and i have seem hundreds upon hundreds of movies and i just loved it. the opening did not ruin it for me, i taught summer was shot at first and maybe half way through the movie i taught mybe it was someone else. i taught the story line did lack a little and could have been better, i would have loved for then to devolop the characters more,(which i think for almost all movies lol) but about the "hip hop" thing. the hamptons was a great place for this i think, not alot of people assoicated black people with the hamptons unless its diddy (which i see no simiuaity to in this movie besides the hamptons and the party) i really think this story would have been horriblie in the city, the small town "feel" of the movie let u know how inclosed everyone was and how all of it really was going down right under peoples noses (blair underwood's creepin) all in all i give it an 8 outta 10 personally

ps to add one more thing, i saw this movie last year in the theater, so did it really come out in 2002?? cause i saw it with my mom when i was living in atlanta around this time last year?

I agree with everything ruffridachic said! i bought the movie because of Richard T. Jones and could never be dissapponted with him in anything he does. I never have liked or understood why movies begin with the end. I liked that it was shot in the hamptons the inner city's have been done over and over again it added to the story line. I am hopeless romantic and wanted the happy the ending with G and Skye riding off into the sunset.

PS. hello everyone!!!! The cheating girlfriend was there she had the nerve to show to the party after admitting to cheating on him for a year! there was atleast two close up shots on her before he started shooting and she was shot lying behind Skye screaming on the ground.

I watched it for the first time last nite as a rental..agree with a couple other posters who stated the eye-candy factor was strongly at work in BOTH Richard T. Jones & Blair Underwood. Here's my take on it..inserting arrow since spoilers are included:

The opening scene of Summer G walking on the beach, covered with blood didn't ruin the ending for me. Of course, there were a few ways that could've gone. Later in the movie, I thought Chip would be the one to shoot Skye. Or G would shoot Chip and got all bloodied up trying to pull Skye off his cheatin' body. It never dawned on me that Mr. Handlin' My Bizness would do what he did, nor the way he did it; yes, I figured he'd go after Nicole, of course. It was like, who wouldn't think that. (for some reason, his appearance made me think of G-Money in New Jack City)

Tracy/Tray -- was he wrong for not telling his own cousin what her "boozhee" hubby was up to -- (I know it's spelled wrong, but I'm leaning on 'sounds like' right now, rather than actually looking up the correct spelling), or was it okay "to keep it between boys."

okay...flash forward to Chip & Skye, right before she pulled his own gun on him - he woke up on the couch & just kind of 'felt' the panties in between the pillows, is that right? Remember, when he had her hemmed up against the closet door & shoved them all in her face, ticked off bcuz he thought she had f'd G in HIS house..she said "they're not mine" Now..THAT was probably the funniest scene in the whole movie to me..uh..were those panties from his trick-hoochie and HE FORGOT he had stashed them there!??? OR....did Tracy/Tray have him a woman at some point during the movie and they just didn't show it...

and last..the shoot up..I thought Chip's mistress died too; wasn't that why her sister was being comforted by B'Mo'Smoove (BMS) at the funeral. (You know, After she put him in his place at the pool party, he turned out to actually be a decent guy there towards the end..I liked that).

All in all:
Oscar-worthy?? Get real! 0/10 stars

Acting -- overall 3/10 stars
love that moody thing RTJ does so well 6/10 stars
BU - a "boozhee" pre-Carlos (Madea's Family Reunion) 5/10 stars
everyone else 2/10 stars (for Chip's mistress & Daisy)

Entertaining? yes, to a small degree. 4/10 stars
(I watched it from start to finish without skipping/fast forwarding..that says a lot for me)

Come on people...this was a MESS!! I just watched it again on showtime trying to make some sense of it, and hoping it would grow on me. Some of you are really grasping at straws here. The whole movie was totally unbeleivable and the woman that played Sky (Maxwell)well her acting was just horrible and dead. And the cousins character was just stupid. He acted more like he was Chips cousin or brother. No blood relative would stand by and allow their relative to be treated like that. Trey was a whimp, and should have stood up to Chip. He was more concrned about his job, which I find myself wondering how he ever got in the first place, seeing how stupid he was. The one thing I did like about it is the location, The Hamptons. It was a great change from most movies, and it's sad they didnt do more with this movie. I agree the beginning killed it. I can't understand why some of you seem to think it wasn't obvious, because it was, especially the obvious funeral scene that followed. Who elses funeral would Chip be attending, and who else would Summer be so distraught over. It was 100% obvious. As for the panties...WAKE UP. Obviously he was accustomed to bringing his other womans panties home with him in his pockets,as with the previous black ones, and he forgot them on one occasion, and they slipped out. There is NO OTHER explanation. Trey had no love interest in this movie, and its ridiculous to think they were left by a woman of his. Which only further proves just how whack this movie really was. It could have been a good movie, but was messed up beyond belief. And how did some of you miss the fact as someone else pointed out that Craigs girlfriend was also shot. She is lying on the ground behind Sky. It seems that Chips mistresses sister is attending the funeral with Beemo, so I guess it's safe to assume they are a couple now, or getting closer. Anyway, like I said this was a MESS, oh and the cop thing with the guy from the tenants association...that whole story was totally unnecessary, considering how things turned out. It was pointless! But I hope they will do more films with black actors on location at the coast. That part I loved, and it would be nice to see more of!!
