The call sign for the Phantom Drop Ship is Darkstar, which is the title of John Carpenters first major film. They may have made this reference because of his other film "Ghosts of Mars"

Although this is late, but the spider creature that has legs coming out of the human skull is no doubt a nod to The Thing.
