Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on XBOX LIVE ARCADE! Complete Achievement List

"Sonic the Hedgehog 2" joins XBOX LIVE ARCADE just in time to compete with SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 on Wii's VIRTUAL CONSOLE! New Achievements to unlock! With thoughts on each!:

Achievements: 12
Gamerpoints [Total]: 200

1. Emerald Hill (5 Points)
How?: Clear the Emerald Hill Zone 1

Thoughts: Keeping in tone with Sonic the Hedgehog: High Speed. An attempt to show people "Hey, if you bought this game the achievements are as easy as finishing the first level." Cheesy.

2. Fast Emerald (15 Points)
How?: Beat Emerald Hill Zone 1 in under 35 seconds in single or co-op mode.

Thoughts: Slightly more difficult, but not by much. E.H. Zone 1 is the easiest mode in the game. Would've been more challenging if it were Wing Fortress Zone. What is the point of giving the option for co-op mode? Tails is useless unless they've managed to make him keep up with Sonic finally in this re-port.

3. Fast Chemical (20 Points)
How?: Beat Chemical Plant Zone 1 in under 45 seconds.

Thoughts: This might make a few people rip their hair out. It will take precise timing, never missing a chance to jump or move, and heading through at full speed. Worthy of 20 points.

4. Casino (10 Points)
How?: Get to the Casino Night Zone.

Thoughts: Seriously, how many people can't complete Emerald Hill and Chemical Plant? Another cheese achievement to make people feel a sense of completion.

5. Super Sonic (20 Points)
How?: Become Super Sonic.

Thoughts: Though the achievement requirement sounds easy, it's deceptive. Becoming Super Sonic in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 was immensely hard because [1] The special stages are difficult, and [2] Tails likes to sabotage all attempts at them. Definitely worth the point tag.

6. Extended Super (20 Points)
How?: Stay in Super Sonic mode for one minute.

Thoughts: This will cause people to scream. This achievement means to complete it you must transform into Super Sonic and keep a constant ring count above 0 for one minute. Super Sonic saps ring energy extremely fast in SONIC 2 and unfortuneately, unless you are quite good at special stages, most don't unlock him until near the end of the game. The best idea would be to beat the game and play through it again with Super Sonic and achieve this on Emerald Hill Zone.

7. Chaos Emerald (10 Points)
How?: Get one Chaos Emerald.

Thoughts: The first Chaos Emerald is not the problem, in fact you can quite easily get about three or four before you have an issue. The later special stages implement horrible amounts of explosive mines and Tails has a knack for sabotage.

8. Chaos Master (40 Points)
How?: Get all the Chaos Emeralds.

Thoughts: Worthy of the price. If you see someone with this achievement you can rank them as a Sonic master. I say this as unlike the Super Sonic ones [which activate even if you do the Super Sonic cheat in the game] the Chaos Emerald one must be achieved legitimately. No cheating or using Bonus Stage level select on it. All skill. Prepare to lose hair, and use words your mother would gasp over.

9. Conquering Time (10 Points)
How?: Beat the game in under an hour.

Thoughts: Yeah, it sounds easy. But that's because nobody ever pays attention to how long it really takes to complete a Sonic game. Deceptively the average gamer completes Sonic 2 in one hour and four minutes. Can you shave your best average? You have to hit every jump perfectly, complete every move exactly, and go for the gold. Basically, you'll have to complete the game again as going for emeralds adds to your time. Super Sonic will be a big help as he has the ability to launch through the level reckelessly without worry and moves three frames faster then normal Sonic.

10. All Multiplayer (5 Points)
How?: Play all four multiplayer zones.

Thoughts: This is a waste of an achievement. Basically, take part in a multiplayer race in all four available zones. You don't even have to win them, you just need to finish them. Set the time to the lowest amount and just run. Win them if you want, or don't. It'll activate once you've finished the race in all four.

11. XBox Live Racer (10 Points)
How?: Win ten versus zones on Xbox Live.

Thoughts: Another useless achievement. Simply clear ten races in first place in online matches. Most people who've played SONIC 2 know the races are a waste of time. So the only REAL problem will be (A) Finding someone ONLINE to race against. or (B) Finding a friend who enjoys being bored enough to go into the race with you to intentionally allow you to win them. These are accumulative, so it doesn't matter if you win one and lose one. Win ten, and you get the achievement.... For what though?

12. Win (35 Points)
How?: Beat the game.

Thoughts: It's self-explanatory. Unless you suck REALLY bad at Sonic the Hedgehog 2, this achievement should be pretty easy. The only enemies that might cause trouble will be Silver Sonic and the Egg Emperor. If you don't go for any other achievements, this should be the third you recieve after "Emerald Hill" and "Casino". It's another "Look! You'd get this many points for finishing the game!" achievement. I say this non-chalantly, but if you suck at Sonic games... The only achievement on this list other then the XBOX LIVE ones you'll be able to get is "Emerald Hill". And that's only if you REALLY, REALLY suck at Sonic games.

So here's the Achievement List for "Sonic the Hedgehog: High Speed" on XBOX LIVE ARCADE and my thoughts, similar to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 just above. Thought I'd place them in the same thread. Enjoy!:

Achievements: 12
Gamerscore [Total]: 200 Points

1. Centurion (10 Points)
How?: Get 100 or more rings.

Thoughts: Anyone who can't collect at least 100 rings in a level in any Sonic game should place down their controller and weep sadly in a corner. You can achieve this on the first stage with little, to no effort at al.

2. Clear Green (5 Points)
How?: Clear the Green Hill Zone.

Thoughts: LOOK HOW EASY! BUY OUR GAME AND YOU GET ACHIEVEMENTS FOR COMPLETEING THE FIRST STAGE! WHOOOO!! Seriously... Anyone who cannot complete all three acts of Green Hill Zone fails at life. Simply defeat Dr. Eggman and his wrecking ball of doom and hit the button on top of the animal roboticizer. The achievement unlocks after the score tally. Easy.

3. Fast Green (10 Points)
How?: Beat Green Hill Zone Act 1 in under 35 seconds.

Thoughts: Easy if you know the level. Don't get distracted by coins. Just run when you have to, and ball up on the slopes when you can. The more speed the better. This achievement can be obtained on the first play through if you want, and if you're really good you can score the "Centurion" achievement along the way.

4. Fast Marble (15 Points)
How?: Beat Marble Hill Zone Act 1 in under 80 seconds.

Thoughts: Sounds easy, no? Unlike the other "beat the clock" achievement, this one requires knowledge of the level and skill. You must keep a constant speed while not getting hit or falling in a pit. If you pull it off right the fastest one can complete Marble Hill Zone Act 1 is around 73 seconds. That's 1:13.

5. Star Light Zone (5 Points)
How?: Get to the Star Light Zone.

Thoughts: Not only is this achievement appalingly easy, it's also somewhat of a curiosity. Star Light Zone is the last real LEVEL of the game, so why does getting to it warrent less gamer points then reaching Spring Yard or Labrinth Zone? To get it, simply finish off Dr. Eggman in Labrinth Zone and hit the button atop the animal roboticizer. It'll activate when your score is done tallying.

6. Spring Yard Zone (7 Points)
How?: Get to the Spring Yard Zone.

Thoughts: Wow... How hard... Get to the third level! *DUN DUN DUN!!!* Beat Marble Hill Zone Act 3, and this will activate after your score tallies.

7. Labrinth Zone (8 Points)
How?: Get to the Labrinth Zone.

Thoughts: Wow, you made it to the fourth level. Congrats, here's eight achievement points to show you how proud we are that you spent your money to download our game. You could've used it to buy SONIC MEGA COLLECTION or something else! Finish Spring Yard Zone Act 3, it'll of course... ACTIVATE once your score is done tallying.

8. Chaos Emerald (10 Points)
How?: Get one Chaos Emerald.

Thoughts: Sonic the Hedgehog, goes down as being the easiest Sonic game in which to obtain the Chaos Emeralds. There are only six of them, and it was new territory for SEGA with the whole BONUS STAGE thing. Not hard at all. Collect 50 rings in any Zone, and complete the special stage, your glittering prize lies at the end of the maze surrounded by the diamonds. Pretty easy.

9. Chaos Master (35 Points)
How?: Get all the Chaos Emeralds.

Thoughts: Remember how you got that first Chaos Emerald? Rinse and repeat for the other five, the stages get longer and slightly more difficult. If you're really good, you can get this achievement by Spring Yard Zone, ACT 2's end. Remember, if you collect all six Chaos Emeralds in the game, you also get to view the game's TRUE ending. Good luck!

10. Win (25 Points)
How?: Beat the game.

Thoughts: Pretty self-explanatory. Beat the game and you get rewarded. Make sure to blast Dr. Eggman's escape ship with a hit before he escapes to teach him a lesson he'll carry with him to the sequel. Congrats! If you got all six Chaos Emeralds, you'll be treated to a GOOD ENDING wherein Sonic tries to go Super Sonic with only six Chaos Emeralds and fails, but it's all good, there's animals everywhere and it's a new day!

11. Fast Win (30 Points)
How?: Beat the game in under 40 minutes.

Thoughts: It's hard. Know the game and know when to jump, dodge, move, push, etc and you'll prevail. Don't go after emeralds, and keep ring collecting to a "saving my life" minimum. On a good speed run the game can be completed in 18 minutes. Good luck!

12. Perfect Win (40 Points)
How?: Beat the game without dying.

Thoughts: Beat the game without dying, this will give you fits. Unless you know the trick to it. There are two ways to do this achievement: (A) Be REALLY good, and you won't have to worry about it. Or (B) Be really normal! Save at the start of EVERY stage using the XBOX LIVE ARCADE exclusive save feature. If you die, just restart from the last save. The game only remembers what's on the save file, so it won't remember you dying. It requires skill to survive each level, yes. But the save feature makes it much, much easier to fix the mistakes. Beat the game this way and you're guaranteed the achievement. WORTH 40 Points.

I don't have a Xbox so I'm unfamiliar with what these points are for, would someone mind explaining please?

As for the challenges, some look really easy, some look really difficult. I might try some on my PS2 version of the games. No points, just for fun!

Also what is Sonic The Hedgehog: High Speed? Judging from the levels it's just a new name for the original game? Is that correct?

reply

Achievements are exclusive to the XBOX 360 and Windows Live. When you do a certain thing in a game [beating a certain boss, pulling a certain move, collecting a certain item, etc.] you "unlock them".

They appear in your profile so other gamers around the world can see them, and act like interactive bragging rights. Each achievement is given a point value. XBOX 360 games usually have 1,000 points, and XBOX LIVE ARCADE games are usually given 200 Points. These points are tallied in what is called a Gamerscore. The points don't do anything but are displayed in your profile. The more points you have, the more bragging rights. The achievements usually add replay value and cause one to test their skill to be rewarded.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG: HIGH SPEED, is just the name given to the XBOX LIVE ARCADE version of Sonic 1. It's the same game from the SONIC MEGA COLLECTION release, but with three added features:
(1) Save Feature - Anytime during the game, you can pause it and save your progress. This was not evident on the original SONIC 1 game, and has LONG been a point of request for fans. You can save in the middle of a level. Stop playing, and when you reload the save you'll continue from EXACTLY where you saved.

(2) Achievements - All 360 game content has achievements, Sonic the Hedgehog is no different.

(3) Online Score - You're final score for the game is shown on a WORLD WIDE ranking list of the best players. To move up the list requires fast completion, defeating foes, collecting rings, and above all not dying. Can you make it to the number one slot and be called the BEST "Sonic the Hedgehog" player in the WORLD?

The 360 version is also actually the JAPANESE release of Sonic 1. Hope this helped you.

reply

That certainly did help me. Thanks a lot mate.

It' been a while people. But I'm back and so is Sonic. With 200 brand new achievement points, this is an easy win. So let' look at them and discuss shall we?

Achievements: 12
Gamerpoints [Total]: 200

1. Complete the Game (25 Points)
How?: Beat the game...? Unless they made it to screw with you...

Thoughts: Obligatory since the first Sonic game was released on XBLA. Beat Eggman on the Death Egg launch deck at the end of the game to claim this prize.

2. Fast Freeze (25 Points)
How?: Complete the Ice Cap Zone

Thoughts: Beat the Ice Cap Zone' boss at the end of the second act to make this thing pop. Look out for the ice balls surrounding it, and don't be too eager to strike unless you are sure for a safe hit. Of course, if you have Super Sonic... Just jump continuously.

3. Complete Chaos (25 Points)
How?: Collect all the Chaos Emeralds.

Thoughts: How Sonic keeps losing the Chaos Emeralds after each game is probably left as unexplained as why Princess Peach is always captured in every Mario game... Just collect the damn things again, go Super Sonic, and whup on Eggman' mechas to teach him the darker side of using an Echidna to rob you.

4. Points III (25 Points)
How?: Score 80,000 Points

Thoughts: How good are you at Sonic the Hedgehog 3? Do lots of Bonus Stages and all the Chaos Emerald challenges and don't quit the game for the whole runthrough to win this fast, or play badly and hope that the grace of Tikal keeps your score above it when the game ends.

5. Marble Finishes (15 Points)
How?: Complete Marble Garden Zone.

Thoughts: Play through both acts then work with Tails at the end to beat up Eggman' new flying drill mecha. THe key here is to wait for it to attack then calm down. Don't be too hasty going after it until it' settled down to a speed you can hit comfortably or Sonic' next adventure will begin when his spikey body smashes into the mountains below.

6. Wet Feet (15 Points)
How?: Run across water.

Thoughts: This is the point where they ran out of ideas for achievements. This happens AUTOMATICALLY when you are booking it at top speed across a body of water. This will most likely unlock at some point during Hyrdocity Zone Act 1.

7. Wet and Wild (15 Points)
How?: Finish the Hyrdocity Zone.

Thoughts: Finish the Hydrocity Zone. Pretty much just book it for the level as Sonic' constant speed keeps you moving fast enough and in the correct path. In the end. Use the water spouts created by Eggman' mecha dropping the grenades or using it' propaller [you'll know when] to crack the egghead and move on to the next level.

8. Points II (15 Points)
How?: Score 40,000 points.

Thoughts: If you do all the Chaos Emerald challenges and book it through the game this should unlock around the last act at some point. Same tips as above and try to avoid dying as that doesn't help your score any.

9. Chaotic (10 Points)
How?: Collect a Chaos Emerald.

Thoughts: In the very beginning of the game, move to the right until you drop off the cliff and hold left you will land beside an odd grey rock. Spindash it and you will go through it into a secret room with a giant ring. Enter the ring, complete the challenge by collecting all the blue orbs... Get the Emerald... Cake = Delicious.

10. Halfway There... (10 Points)
How?: Collect 50 Rings.

Thoughts: This could be a joke referencing that if you have 50 rings and all 7 Chaos Emeralds you can become Super Sonic... It could also be referencing you need 100 rings for an extra life. Either way, this lame achievement can be completed on Angel Island Zone Act 1. If you cannot collect 50 rings in a Sonic game with minimal effort at some point... Save your MS points for something a bit friendly to your play style. Such as... Roaming the XBOX LIVE dashboard aimlessly until it burns itself into your television perhaps?

11. Goodie Gumballs (10 Points)
How?: Get a blue gumball.

Thoughts: Collect 50 rings then find a post. Hit it to cause stars to float around the top then jump into that circle of stars... Keep bouncing on the sides of the walls of the gumball minigame until a blue gumball falls out... Collect it. I believe this is also the water bubble shield, so you can use this to keep you safe from drowning, which you probably do a lot if you don't get this achievement during the first stage of the game.

12. Points I (10 Points)
How?: Score 20,000 points.

Thoughts: Even if you recklessly mow into every robot, boss, spike, and knuckle in your path. You will get this simply for beating the game as long as you don't get a game over along the way.
