I have Sonic Mega Collection Plus for the PS2 which apparently only has the Japanese version of Sonic The Hedgehog on it, but I was wondering what the differences are between the US/European and Japanese versions are? Am I missing out on anything? Or gaining anything?
shareA bit old and you might have the answer now but:
The differences between the JP and the US/EU are (apart from the Japanese one came out later and even the very late builds of Sonic 1 used this version too but much much harder to find) -
* Scrolling clouds in Green Hill and possibly Spring Yard
* Underwater effect in Labyrinth Zone
* Rearranged the level select in game order rather than production order
* Changed codes for Debug and maybe level select
* If your machine is set to Japanese, after getting 500,000 points you get an extra life (read about that at Sonic Retro, may not be true but was carried to Sonic 2)
* Other fixes.
Despite all of this, the jump bug wasn't fixed and the spike bug was a feature (later changed in the 5th/6th Beta of Sonic 2 and future games after this - the one on Mega Collection is a HACK). This may or may not help you.
