Throne of Blood.

Anyone else find the lady churning on the wheel reminiscent of Throne of Blood?

reply

Not to mention the arrows! The whole film is full of references to classic Japanese cinema - I'm too ignorant to get half of them, but they're there. That's kind of the point, isn't it?

reply

That's not ignorant at all. I don't get all the references of those stupid spoof films like Date Movie. You can watch a lot of films but the references might be too subtle.

reply

Ha! I've no idea what that is, but if it's a spoof of American rom-com I certainly wouldn't get any of the references, because that's not something I take any interest in. But I do watch a lot of Japanese cinema, so I should get some of them here.

I recognise the jidai-geki periods and genres, of course, and I know who the Shinsengumi are when we meet them; not so sure of the Meiji-period stuff, the carriage and the bicycle, and the repentant agent, I feel I should know where that comes from. Maybe some day I'll be watching some Toho drama and go "Oh, that's the thing from Sennen Joyuu! I hope so. All good fun, anyway.

reply

I watch a lot of Japanese cinema as well, but you seem much more informed about it than I do.

reply

I had not actually seen Throne of Blood yet, but once I did, that scene really stood out.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.
