Kon was a great director, no doubt.
However, this movie is a mess. The plot is a chaos where actually almost nothing happens for real. Almost all we see is a mix of memories and scenes from movies that blend in incoherent ways. This could be ok if only the old lady was narrating her life. But what irritates me is that the other 2 people never correct or question this madness. At the opposite, they take part of this chaos (except at some points, where they clarify something. And I wonder why, seen the rest of the plot).
The message of the movie is so straightforward (and poorly and blatantly declared in the last lines) that I can't see the need to hide it under so many layers of chaos, just to spit them in your face just before the end credits.

The scenes blend together beautifully. Each one leading into "the chase" that she enjoys.

The documentarians never correct her because its her life and movies she's narrating. Would you want someone to correct you on your experiences?

It was a beautiful way to present a life story: mixing in real life experiences with scenes from her movies.

Straightedge means I'm better than you.

That's the rule in magical realism. The same happens in PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, STRANGER THAN FICTION and MIDNIGHT IN PARIS.

Yeah I was disappointed. I'd seen this title come up several times as being great and tearjerking. I found it just...boring really. I didn't like all the movie scenes just re-hashing the same thing over and over again in different eras. That took up at least half the movie and I was bored with it. I liked the beginning and the set up...really I liked it until it started doing movie scene after movie scene. It just lost my engagement. Although then I did like the snippets of Genya in the past and his being invisible to her, that was interesting. but that's about it.

I get and personally appreciate the love/hate thrill/torture of that eternal unrequited flame, and 'the chase' shown in this whole movie. It just dragged to me with all the movie scenes. This idea could have worked better as a short maybe...to me, just little old me.

I agree with one of the posters above when they said the scenes blended together perfectly. Usually movies like this try too hard and it becomes a mess.
