It was totally boring. It took me a couple days to get through it. And I like anime a lot. They really cheesed it up with the two guys following her around filming her story.
Although I guess one of them turned out to be important, he didn't need to be in every scene. It got confusing what events were real and what they were making up for the fun of it.
There's also the theme of unrequited love, a journey through the years of Japanese cinema, and so much more. Yeah, it was about the journey. All the best stories are about the journey: The Odyssey, Lord of the Rings, Heart of Darkness.
They just had different journeys to tell. Millennium Actress won numerous awards and acclaim for being an incredible journey through Japanese history. There's a reason it's on so many best of lists.
I can understand what the director was interested in about it being a 'all-about-the-chase' and 'it's-about-the-journey' movie. I was not big on it though.
