How did this film end?

So I watched this film on TV last night and although it got off to a rather slow start, I started to get into it. Problem was, I dozed off! I woke up in the final scene with Mr Zao and the young girl, Caroline. What happened before that? I'd like to know what became of Sarah. Anyone care to fill me in? Thanks!

Sarah cursed her lovers wife. The wife got into a car accident and Sarah thought that she was personally responsible. She tried to commit suicide however Zao changed her pills with rice. Sarah asked Zao to take sides with her decision to curse the wife. Zao felt bad for Sarah and made her a cake with her suicide pills. Sarah left the apartment and left a note for Zao saying that she was quitting acting and she enjoyed their frienship etc. However Zao never read it because Caroline stole the letter. Zao was left devestated that he didn't get to say goodbye.

hmm, i think you got it a bit wrong.

Sarah is the understudy (although she says the reverse) to her lover's wife, she tries to commit suicide on the night of the rehearsal, and Zao substitutes rice for her sleeping pills. All the platonic friendship happened in the first half.

The wife gets in a car accident and is left in a coma, so sarah leaves all guilty about putting a curse on the wife. Sarah leaves a note for Zao which he never gets.

Now, whats not evident is Caroline's relationship with Zao throughout the first half. Caroline it seems is a bit jealous of Sarah, and keeps sarah's note.

Zao is feeling the loss of Sarah hits the cake he made for sarah out of caroline's hand.

Zao then bows to ask for forgiveness, and caroline forgives him. she gives a bit of an insight into why she keep popping into Zao appartment; she is looking for a father figure as well

I thought where Caroline stuffed something into that pocket on the chair at the end she was secreting Sarah's letter for Zao to find it....? I was hoping so anyway!

NO she's making sure the letter doesnt fall out, spying on the old man to make sure he wasnt watching her.

Caroline is "a bit jealous of Sarah"? Haha, I think that's the understatement of the year. Caroline lies to Mr. Zao and tells him that she overheard a phone call Sarah was having in which she said Zao was "bothering her". So, not only does Sarah rob Zao of any closure, he is left thinking that he was nothing to Sarah, a nuisance. He is left crushed and hurt, and all because of Caroline's petty jealousy.

That is sort of the theme of the movie though, how other people's jealousy intrudes upon relationships. This is true of the various people in the building that either try to convince Zao to abandon Sarah, separate the two or as in the case of Castellac, tries to seduce and then sexually assaults Sarah. Of course, this is a theme with Sarah too, in her relationship with Philippe and her jealousy of his wife, her "understudy" Sylvia Martin.
