there is nothing in this movie, no nudity, no intellectual stimulation, no entertainment, nothing...no wonder it did not get released in the US. if u r looking to see leelee without clothes, dont coz she doesnt show anything. avoid the movie.
if u r in the US u might have problem in getting it, but why u want to watch it? if u r able to get it easily then see it, otherwise dont sweat about it, its not worth it.
There are plenty of cable channels that will give you loads of nudity, and a whole bunch of car chases and explosions to keep you entertained. Stick to those in the future.
I found this a subtle, riviting movie!!!! There is a complexity in the characters, and both are able to say tons with simple expressions in their faces. The spoken dialogue is only 10% of what's going on-- Wong and Sobieski are both masters of body language and unspoken communication, and both give a real sense spontaneous performances. The camera work compliments the story perfectly. I had to remind myself that they were acting, I chanced upon this movie on Australian TV late at night, getting ready to go to bed, and was locked to the TV until it ended.
I am a great fan of nudity, but actually showing details of Sobieski's anatomy would have had the same effect as dumping ketchup on one of Mr. Zao's entrees. Having the viewer fill in things with their imagination (not something American audiences like to do) was exactly the right thing to do with this movie, and the effect is stunning.
Or were you complaining about Mr. Wong not geting naked?
Anyway, this movie is not for everyone, and should not be on a shelf with Wes Snipes or Schwartzenegger. It is a subtle, engaging, unforgettable movie, and one that I will definitely rent to see again.
we all have different tastes and we all enjoy different things. if u liked the movie, then great. i didnt like it and im sure not many people liked it otherwise they would have released it in the US, the biggest market in the world. still, there r movies i have liked that not many others have, revolver for example, so we all have different tastes.
I liked the movie even with the disappointing ending. However as an Australian I can say that Leelee's 4 Ozzie sentences were off track. More impressive though than some actors who think Australian's are still all British (it's been 200+ years people). I just wished that Mr Zao got the goodbye note so he wouldn't have felt so down.
I feel very sorry for those that missed the relationship issues and the cultral exchange of this movie ... quiet a special play ... what is reality and what is not reality ... life is a stage ...
the reason it wasnt released in the USA was probably due to the Lolita-esque imagery.
I wasnt sure where they were taking a chinese character, and elderly chinese character on this journey to be honest. COuld have caused a storm of racism LOL
As it turned out the horrendous french accents and the interjection of the play 2/3 of the way through, made it less a movie and much more of a "docu-drama".
