Am I missing something

Did the movie actually ended when Olivier is loading the woods on his wagon and Francis came along to help him? I hope it is probably my DVD missing a few more scenes.

That's the end alright.

Olivier realises that Francis is just a kid (with no one to turn to) who made a horrible mistake, not the demon his wife takes him for. After this very difficult confrontation Olivier has forgiven Francis. And Francis realises that too after the initial shock.

When Olivier was loading the tarp and rope into his car and then taking him to a remote location, you get the feeling the outcome will be quite different (and quite possibly Olivier thought so too). But as is said in another topic, this movie is not about revenge (which would not bring his dead son bakc), it's about forgiving and redemption.

I also think it's quite likely Olivier will agree to become his guardian.

I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

[…] Olivier has forgiven Francis.
Not forgiven, but Olivier gives the killing a place in his life of rituals and precision. There is no room for emotions, just perfectly fitting constructions.

reply

I understand all that. But do we really need to watch Olivier eat his meal for ten minutes? I mean it stretches a lot of scenes so much.

That never happens.

Yes, you are missing the word Spolier in your title.

I find it ridiculous you people think something's missing just because the ending is a bit more open-ended than your Hollywood films. Is the audience getting so stupid that we need to be spoonfed every single bit of information?

reply

In a word: YES. Especially American audiences, who are so numbed with ADHD, that they need action, sex, and killings every second.

Part of the beauty of a film like this is you can draw your own conclusions. in my ending Olivier becomes his guardian and mostlikely his ex wife goes off the deep end.

reply

Your ending is better than the real ending.

Exactly, it was a perfect ending. After the inevitable blow up and confrontation, they had made peace with one another. I also think it likely that Olivier continued to mentor him. It takes a very big man, and an outstanding human, to do a thing like that. I think that was the point of the film. Few could find it within themselves to do it. The ex-wife for example.

I think the cafe scene was placed their to show just that, how compassionate and caring Olivier was towards his students, even though his exterior was gruff, unemotional, and distant.

Well this was Oliver's way of dealing with the murderer of his son. Another person's way of dealing with it doesn't make them a lesser person. It's just that Oliver's is a less common response but as others have said his meticulous nature would help him to compartmentalise and contain his other feelings towards Francis.
