I'm not sure where it's filmed, but the story is supposed to play in a mountain village in Sichuan province

It was actually filmed in Zhangjiajie Mountains, Hunan province in China. I may be mistaken about the intent, but I believe the flooding they referred to in the movie was supposed to be for the Three Gorges dam. Peter Hessler's book "Rivertown, Three Years on the Yangtze" is an excellent source of info about one mountain town, Fuling, where this flooding took place. Three Gorges dam is highly touted as being an answer to the electricity problem in China (as in, not enough), but the flooding was extremely controversial because of the damage, not only to the great Yangtze river, but the historical monuments and also in terms of the thousands of people "relocated" to "better homes"--there was a LOT of social upheaval associated with its creation.
