Banned in US.

I want to see it because I read the book to see why it was banned in the Federal Way Washington, (near Seattle) school libraries. People claimed that there was GRAPHIC sexual scenes which would be bad for children to read.

I think it's ironic that the theme of the book was about boys being sent to a re-education camp where they could not read books, and that the school district was banning the book.

I really hope that that they at least discuss the abortion which is more likely the reason these Bible thumpers were pushing the ban. If it's not in the film then it's a shame and a waste of time to see the rest of it.

This book and movie are NOT banned in the US.

Because a book was not allowed in a children's library, at a school, does not make it "Banned in the US." There are a great many books you won't find in school libraries because of their content, but they arn't "banned in the US." The decision of a single school board only reflects what those six people thought about what THEY want to hand to children AT SCHOOL. The book is still available in the county or city libraries, and certainly could be ordered with ease online or in any bookstore. This seems reasonable - I wouldn't want NAKED LUNCH banned, and it isn't, but I also wouldn't want 12 year old kids reading it.

umm its showing dec 5 - 8th in providence ri's cable car cinema... so i doubt its banned.

i dont think the US bans many movies by the way.. if any

reply

we don't ban movies we just remake them...

The big thing was that I wanted people to want to look in and read what and maybe question why would the book be removed from a school. It was the abortion, but they didn't want to say that up front, so they fall back on the chance that there was naughty scenes.

Always question.

Can we at least agree to ban the remaking of movies...

I would hope no book is banned in the US.
It's weird they banned it at the library. I read the book for book club for school, and it was recomended by my 9th grade English teacher. I don't really even recall any GRAPHIC sexual scenes, but it's been a few years since I've read it.

On a similar note, the Joy Luck Club was banned from my middle school's library, for being too "mature". What a bunch of baloney.

It was banned from my jr. high, thats where the whole fuss started. It was banned because the teacher did an assignment where the students had to draw a scene from the novel, and one student chose to draw the scene by the tree where Luo first has sex with the seamstress. A parent complained that the teacher asked her son to draw something of the sort(which was quite far from the truth, he could have drawn anything). in the end, the book was not banned, it was removed from 9th grade cirriculum and is now a Junior cirriculum book. I'm actually writing an essay about its current status in our district tonight.

Yeah while the Book isn't that bad as far as content it's not really an appropriate novel for anyone 7th grade or below. I had the pleasure of reading this book for my contemporary Literature class at my college and I thought the book was really well written.

Children who are on the level to read this book (which I expect to be at least at the middle school age) should be mature enough for the contents of the book.

reply

I know nothing about it being banned, I do know that I borrowed my copy of the movie from the local library.
