Clara, the circus girl

Was Clara, the girl with blue eyes, sleeping with her stepdad?

I also thought they were a couple at first, but then when it was pointed out that he was her stepdad, I was curious of their relationship. After thinking about it for a bit, I think his jealously and overprotectiveness was just that of most fathers.

reply

Agreed. At first Tonio realized his attraction to Clara could not be acted on because she was with Salustiano. When it was revealed that he was her step-father, then she became available, within the bounds of dealing with a protective father.

reply

He wasn't her stepdad. A friend of his said "sua afilhada" which means he could be her godfather at most. If he was her stepdad it would have said "sua enteada".

reply

No, I don't believe she was sleeping with her "stepdad" or "godfather".

Clara seemed too strong-willed a character to allow that to happen.

Hey look! You can't see a thing!

I haven't seen the movie, but know enough of Brazilian tradition to know that by saying she was his afilhada, he was either her godfather, or a man who "adopted" her and probably had sex with her, which is something common in the less developed areas of Brazil...

reply

Excuse me, I live in Brazil and it is not true that someone would be having sex with anyone who he would call goddaughter, unless there was a strong reason for that, what's not clear in the movie.

reply

They sleep in the same bed cause they are poor and there are no more beds, not because there is an incestous relationship there. They are like father and daughter and that is why it is normal to do it if there is no other bed/matress. At least in some cultures physical closeness does not imply anything sexual. Maybe it is weird in your culture, but if you think about it, I have seen parents kissing children on the lips both in the US as in some european countries. To me that is discusting and wrong 'cause, where I come from, lipkissing is reserved for lovers ONLY and a parent would never kiss a child on the lips unless the parent was abusing the child. But it is normal to sleep in the same bed when there are no other beds available or when the child just happens to need company at a certain time for any reason.

"or a man who "adopted" her and probably had sex with her, which is something common in the less developed areas of Brazil..."

lol say what???? i never heard of anything of the kind and i'm brazilian...she'd only call him her godfather if he was her godfather damn it...she could maybe (as an exception) call him that as a nickname but this term is not related to sex at all, not even in the less developed areas of Brazil in wich people are really religous and mostly catholics (wich i think the term comes from but pardon me if i'm wrong)

reply

the guy is Pacu's godfather because he names him. im not sure it tells us what the relationship with Clara is.

The sex part is pure BS... your source is nuts or playing tricks on you... I'm from North east, and theres no such thing here or other parts of Brazil...

reply

I disagee that having sex with your godfather is something common anywhere in Brazil. At first, It would not be acceptable. They slept together, what doesn't mean that they had any kind or sex or intention do to that.

reply

I'm of the opinion that they were. For everyone who says "OMG What? We don't do that in Brazil," keep in mind that this is in 1910 (also, a work of fiction). Back when 20 year olds bent to their father's will like oxen. How many of you would take lashings and orders to kill at 20?

The way Salustiano treats her is far beyond "protective father figure". He doesn't get protective when he sees her sitting with Tonio, he gets jealous. This is his woman. He becomes restless when he notices she's not in bed with him.

Clara is a beautiful woman, and he's not related to her by blood. While she may have a free spirit, she probably doesn't have anything else. She's half of the two-person circus, and unless she wants to settle down as some farmer's wife, she doesn't have any option but to keep going. If he treated her badly, she would probably leave, but this is her life, and for a woman of her position, bedding with a drunkard isn't the worst she could do.

reply

yeah, that's what I was thinking too.

The way he was really jealous made me think, "hmm, there's something on going between him and Clara if he's getting upset because she's sitting and talking to Tonio."

I figure it doesn't matter what culture the person is from or the times they are living in - I think it can happen in any culture, no matter what kind of religious views and so on a person believes. A person can say, "I'm Catholic or Hindu" but then they go off and do something "against" their culture, religious views, etc.

Anyhow, I'm impressed with the amount of postings here.

thanks!

Hi. I`m from the northeast of Brazil.

I think that no one can tell for sure what was the relationship between the two, as the director leaves that opened for everybody`s thoughts.

Now, about this godfather/sex discussion, it is quite the contrary in ANY part of Brazil. If someone is pointed the godfather of a boy or a girl, that means that somebody is almost like a "second father".

Of course that the situation in this movie was quite unique. Thery were travelling mates, her father was not around anymore and she was over 18.. So, who knows? If I`d had to guess, I`d probably say they werent sleeping together, the circus guy seemed quite a decent man.

- He moves his lips when he reads. What does that tell you about him?

Without Clara, Salustiano has no livelihood and will have difficulty surviving alone.
That's the way I saw it too. He wasn't so much jealous as much as stressed to think of what might happen to the circus.
