Best animated Spider-Man series?

What do you think is the best animated Spider-Man series ever? What about the worst?

reply

The best one was the 90's version. Great story lines and characters.
Although, the new one was pretty awesome as well. I loved the animation.

The MTV series is the best one for me. It's the only Spider-man animated series so far that matches the comic book's level of story, action, dialogue and violence. The 90's series came up short in all these areas. It was basically kid's stuff and not much else. I don't think it was supposed to be anymore than that. If you make a Spider-man cartoon for the kiddies it's gonna fall way short of the comics.

I really liked how this cartoon took SpiderMan to the darker side. More about his turmoil between what he wants and what he feels is right. This was an awesome cartoon and MTV should have kept it up!!

This is the best animated series I've ever seen, it makes the 60s cartoon suck and the 90s kiddie series suck. This show is what Spider-Man should really be about. If no channel picks this up (I think it should be on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim) then they should continue making episodes and just release them on DVD, I'm sure they'd sell money! Many people are going to disagree with me on this being the best animated series ever (i'm going to get people saying The Simpsons is or some other baloney) but if you want proof, look to the animation in episode 8 on the first DVD of the first season special edition that came out in January, the one with Electro, watch some of the CGI effects, and tell me that does not look like something out of the movies. This sets the standard for great animated series everywhere! Its dark, violent (to a point, we're not talking blood and gore violence but pretty dark) and a little bit of everything else! This is not Spider-Man for kids, this is made for mature teenagers and adults, hence the TV-PG rating. There is mild language and the action/violence is pretty intense for younger viewers, but who am I to say not let them watch it. Bet you alot of younger children are watching Adult Swim, The Simpsons and Family Guy, so I can't stop them, but this is a pretty cool show none the less. It sort of reminded me of the HBO series of "Spawn", which was super cool (except the third and final season which wasn't all that great).

I would put them in order the same way you did. The thing I like about the 94 one was the story line seemed to come pretty close to the comic I grew up reading. I don't know why so many people hated it. Granted the 3d houses looked out of place, but who cares. I didn't watch Spiderman to look at the buildings. I watched it to see my childhood hero.
The 2003 one was pretty freaking amazing too. I didn't see every episode, but the visuals were amazing. Also, I liked how it developed its own new characters and mythology.

Hate is a strong word. I just didn't like the 90's series. I think I can explain why there are those that don't like it. Some People don't like it because it had all the trappings of a children's cartoon. Spider-man didn't punch anybody or engage in fist fights. Fist fights happen frequently in Spider-man comics. There is no getting around it. The DC animated cartoons had fist fights. Villains and cops used laser pistols instead of guns with real bullets. They use the real deal in the comics and in the DC cartoons; real guns. Nobody died except Uncle Ben which is a given. Death occurs in the comics. The show couldn't tackle that because it was made for the kiddies.

The plots were very outlandish for Spider-man. It had Spiderman going up against Dormamu, The Spot, The Big Wheel, and Morbius the Non Vampire (he couldn't suck blood). Dormamu is WAY out of Spidey's league. Dormamu is a villain for Doctor Strange. The plot devices like Dimensional portals, and The Beyonder and the secret wars. The corny, cliche and very fast dialogue. If Spidey sees a lever he has to pull. He first thinks out loud ("I gotta pull that lever!") before actually doing it. He should just pull the lever. No need to think everything out loud. His constant thinking to himself out loud can be annoying.

The cartoon made the mistake of making Spider-man seem like he was chosen to recieve special powers because he had some big important destiny. One of things that made the comic Spider-man work was that he wasn't important. He recieved his powers totally at random and that ANYBODY could have been Spider-man. The cartoon writing was too cliche and contrived. That's OK for the kiddies but not for the older set.

The 90's series may have lasted longer but that doesn't say anything about the quality of the show. The 90's cartoon was aimed at kids and it showed. The MTV series avoided many of these trappings and so far in terms of action, dialogue and violence is closest to the comics.

Seriously, what is with the hatred of the 90's series. The 90's Spider-Man totally blows this 2003 series, and even the movies away. There were a couple issues as with the consistancy with the comics, but this was nothing compared to the blasphemy the new series created.

"Seriously, what is with the hatred of the 90's series."

Read my previous post. It answers your question. Hatred? I said Hate is a strong word in my first sentence. I said I just didn't like it.

I thought the 60's cartoon was kind of charming, but not enough to stick around. I clicked on the option in the special features in the "The Return of Green Goblin" DVD, but I left after the Doc Ock episode. Too boring.

90's Spider-Man was too damn hard to keep up with, ie. "Sins of the Father Chapter XIV"?? How many chapters did it need? I've been renting the DVDs and watching them at my own pace, but the animation was really lack-luster (though common for the time), the use of 3-D was a nice touch, even if it didn't compare with what we have today, and Peter Parker had a good voice actor... he just did a lot of talking. I couldn't tell whether he was talking or thinking half of the time. And Mary-Jane... what did Peter see in her? Forgive me, but she just seemed like a red-headed bimbo to me, who wouldn't really stand out in any situation.

I know it's not exactly appropriate to compare in this situation, but... Batman was so much better. What's sad is I think they aired on the same network, yet Batman came out two years earlier and still had better animation and fisticuffs and authentic guns (and a better score, but that's just my opinion).

The MTV series, however, ruled. They cursed, they bled, they freakin' beat each other up, and the cell animation was awesome. In many ways, I enjoyed watching it even more than the Justice League show, which was still constrained to a censorship program of some sort. I liked the almost-no-limits feel of Spider-Man.

MTV Spidey takes the cake for me.

i hate this version of spiderman

for starters the animation is annoying, the plot development sucks and the voices are crap.

In my opinion the 90's version had best plotlines

The 80's spiderman and his amazing friends as well as the 60's version were "fun" and campy

I would rather watch the spiderman tv show or spidey super stories on the electric company then this crap

This show was basically the animated dawsons creek with a costumed superhero. I'm all up for giving new shows a chance and not looking at the previous incarnation. But the 90's one was the best. I mean its had the comic book feel. heck the 60's version was better. Like someone said the 90's version had a story and they decided to make the romance 5th and everything else first.

out of 5 i have to give this series a 1.5 out of 5.

60's - first season was great and animation was excellent. Amazing musical score. Too bad the subsequent seasons went into the crapper with the recycled scenes and endless repeats of spidey swinging around

80's - sucked but fondly remembered

90's - animation very weak and stories WERE NOT consistent with the comics OR its own series. Lack of violence made it dull and drab. My 3 yr old likes it though. I like the earlier comment of "theres a lever, i think I'll grab it"

MTV - great animation and I love the heightened violence. Shakira (? the sword lady) killing her employer was surprising to see and really stepped it up. as far the animation its incredible. Its 3D but with a flat 2-d colour scheme that makes it look like a comic book. The real beauty of it is the use of shading and darkness and the subtleties are handled. the story lines are a little hard to swallow but I can deal with it.

The 90's series was BORING!
I mean, when i pick up and read a Spider-Man comic, OK, like the action, OK, i like the plots, OK, i like the villains and characters. BUT the thing i like the best is the rythm! Even in a still drawing, Spidey has an electricity and movement, and so much grace and humor that i find myself smiling evertyime the guy talks! It has GREAT humor, punch-lines, and a great feel overall. I liked how you can take it as a comedy super-hero if you wish, but at the same time it has strong points and stories which are REALLY serious. But it's that blend of things that i love.
The 90's series was slow, not engaging at all, the enemies seemed all boring, the animation, even then, i NEVER liked. but most importantly, Peter was BORING; he was just too damn serious all the time. The ONLY part i liked was Venom's because it did show him taking on a dark side, and showed struggle within him! THAT is more like Spider-man. But, it was only ONE saga.
Now, the 2003 series, is BRILLIANT. Its constant struggle between Peter's identities, the characters and their relationships (This MJ i COULD really fall for, not like the pain in the ass that the 90's series was, or even the movie's), the villains, the animation (EXTREMELY fast, as it should be!), and most of all, a Spidey that is ALWAYS goofing around, making punch lines all the time, that is quite clever at the same time, and that i can really get to relate to. It even has things like him doing stuff while he automatically beats the crap outta thugs (like when he writes MJ about his greatest secret, and you see him making different letters as he fights different guys, BRILLIANT!). And, hands down, the ending was PERFECT, suddenly, in one single moment, Spidey's world turned upside-down in MORE that one occasion, and him tossing the suit at the end. As i said twice, BRILLIANT!!!!! I SO hope the make more seasons!!! I know i am enjoying my S1 DVD big time!

i completly dissagree. For its time that was some really good animation that didnt have to relie on extreeme colors ala red and yellow backrounds and neon colors. The action was excellent. The stories werent weak and they had so frekin good continuity it was amazing. They never left anything open that wasnt explained in the end in some way. Personally i think your 3 yr old has better taste then you but thats just me.

I liked the 90s seris the best. It had Much better charcter work and storys. Ill admitt the animation wasnt the greatest but i love it. The mtv version had incredible visuals at night time but that was it. The storys are pretty weak and are more often than not the villans are horrible. Dont get me wrong i like the new seris but i love the 90s version. Oh yea they swear and have violence in the new version, Whoop de do, some of u sound like the olny reason u like the show is that theres blood in it. Ill admitt i wish the 90s version dint have to worry about the censers. The 90s version was a lot closer to the comics, had more well thought out storylines and better character development. The New show has fancier animation, more adult content( though not more mature) and for better or for worse has the same vibe as most of the other shows on mtv. I do like the new show but the 90s version is just classic.

The Fantastic Spider-Man. It only had the theme song and 1/4 of an episode completed, though.

Did I mention that I made it over a weekend, and that it's quality is far from professional? Not the best animation, but I really liked the art style (shameful self-promotion at it's finest).

I really liked the spider-man series that was on fox and ran from 94' to 98' and i didnt really like the spider-man MTV brought out

Tis series has to be the worst they have ever made no wonder its been cancelled, the 90's version was the best one of all time that one atleast finished to its final season it was great and very interesting to keep up with. the 80's one ok atleast it was fun to watch just for spider-man, the 60's I havent seen it yet but nothing could be more worse then this show

reply

All you People are Judging with Closed eyes. All these spider-man cartoons are great but for there own time period. Sure in the 60's those cheesy cartoons were amazing to all the spiderman fan at that time. Just like the 90's and 2003 series.
In comparision the 90's spiderman is very tamed and kids oriented compared to the 2003 series, but take a look at the stations they were produced for...90's spider-man was for "Fox Kids" hence it was very censored and kid freindly and the 2003 if produced by MTV for a genrally older audience. Who know maybe in a few year this 2003 series of Spider-man will be treated the same way we treat the 60's series

But to me personally, Im a big Fan of the 90's Spider-man series (excluding Spiderman Unlimited) I love the long epic story telling rather than them going thru a villian an episode. and how they incorperate other characters in the marvel universe in it
