How?

I see a lot of posts giving it high acclaim and rave reviews.
Brits especially, even if it is a more realistic experience of an office, I'd rather actually sit and work in a boring office rather than watch this. Even when I worked in an office alone, it wasn't as dull.

There is no emotional investment in any of the characters, no pull.

Even if The US Office is wacky at times and completely unrealistic at least there was comedic relief and attempts at emotional depth involved for the sake of entertainment. Hardly any characters or character build.

They don't just cut it at 2 seasons without a reason to cancel.

I'm just incredibly impressed that they could take this mush idea and turn it into something so much better.

If Brits sense of humor are actually this dismal and dry then it's seriously depressing.
It's so hard to pay attention.

Oh and you're slothfully not hard enough to penetrate comedy?
Nay, actually provide even a small insight into why a peculiar amount of human beings find this show as any form of viable entertainment?
Nay, dote upon it?
Nor shall you actually answer, nor defend any valid ideation or question.. unless your incredibly brief rebuttal is an actual parody of the boringness (which was clearly amiss) amongst the brevity of the duration of said series.

Fawlty Towers, widely regarded as the most successful comedy ever produced - two seasons. (And inspired another American imitation.)

The subjective appreciation of comedy is like the subjective appreciation of music. The Beatles are without a doubt the most successful pop group in the history of pop music, with achievements that are unlikely to be surpassed. Nevertheless, you find the occasional person who doesn't think the band were all that good.

'Yes! Don't mention the war! I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it and I don't agree with that in the workplace!' - David Brent's imitation of Eric Hitchmo as Basil Fawlty

I couldn't find anything to back the Fawlty Towers statement, I guess I'll give it a go and see what you're talking about. Always interested in more comedy.

Nobody can deny that The Beatles weren't a revolutionary band, even if they don't enjoy.
Heck in Chile they play midi and instrumental versions of their tunes from radios in the cabs to fine dining restaurants, seems they still have a lot of Beatle mania going on. I almost got tired of it while visiting but not quite cause they're great.

I get that comedy and all opinions are subjective but there is so much subject matter out there, I just can't believe this show couldn't make me laugh even once.
Just to mention Ricky Gervais has been funny in quite a few things but, yikes!

reply

he basically just a chilled out entertainer.

Personally I think both versions of The Office are hilarious, but they are also totally different so I don't see the point in comparing them.

No they dont, this doesnt mean it wasnt funny or wasnt highly rated.

The fact tv series run forever in the usa (PLEASE NOTE THESE EXACT SAME SERIES DONT RUN ON AND ON IN OTHER COUNTRIES) doesnt say anything about the show but the people who watch them.

completely unrealistic at least there was comedic relief and attempts at emotional depth involved for the sake of entertainment.

WOW and WOW

First off saying the usa version was more realistic than the uk version LOL
UK versions got feeling due to it being realistic.
usa version is just low quality monty python and 1930s slap stick.
usa show has characters and personalities? LOL

The decision to run The Office for 2 seasons + a Christmas special was made by it's creators, no one else, because they (Gervais and Merchant) had no desire to run the idea into the ground. I've no doubt that if they had gone for a third, fourth, even fifth series, the BBC, or any other channel would have commissioned it. It would have been commissioned until it got stale and boring, and no one was watching, exactly what it's creators were trying to avoid. Note that the also popular and successful Extras also had a run of two series plus special, as did Derek.

I don't necessarily agree with the original comment, not at all, though, to some extent, I find myself in general sympathy about any office environment. I feel the same, very much so. Could I work in an office again? Don't know.

The thing about this sort of stuff is that you have to give it time, and try it multiple times, and look at it from various angles.

There was a time, when I didn't understand why such seemingly completely boring and uninteresting things, as 'train simulators' exist. Who the heck would play a simulator of a thing that just goes on rails and can only speed up or slow down and nothing else? How immensely boring and uninteresting!

However, after trying such things out of sheer curiosity, I slowly started to realize there's more to it than I thought at first, and it's actually quite challenging to give a 'good run', because the smallest thing can ruin it and make you lose your 'chains' (hard to explain).

So in fact, some train simulators can be quite exciting in their own, maybe slightly dull way. Same goes for 'truck simulators' - I couldn't fathom how anyone could play something that simulators a dull job.

After trying it out, I realized there's always a challenge in there - in the train simulators, you have to arrive at a certain spot at a certain time - how close to 0 cm and exactly 'on time' can you get? (I have gotten to 0 cm, and only a couple of seconds off, but not simultaneously).

The truck simulator has surprisingly quite a lot of variety, nice sceneries, and gives you an almost meditative, relaxing ride, with a goal, and satisfaction of delivering the goods, and thus reaching that goal. I found it was easy to let your thoughts wander, and yet feel 'important' as delivering the goods from one location to another - and it was fun to 'drive in traffic' and even obey the traffic rules.

So you can find fun in seemingly dull places - TV shows like this are just another variety of this 'treasures inside boredom' phenomenon, that made me interested in all kinds of things I previously didn't care about.
