According to the Thai movie industry, Suriyothai was cut down from a Five hour edit to a more manageable Three hour and a bit edit. The original running length is somewhere in the region of Eight hours, and it was the intention of the distributors and studio to release that as a TV mini-series, whether free or pay-per-view, is unknown, as it still hasn't materialised yet.
The running time listed on the western version that I just rented from Blockbuster is 142 minutes (2 hours, 22 minutes). There are lots of special features on the DVD, including "The Making of Suriyothai," outtakes, and trailers, that add a lot of time and understanding to the viewing enjoyment.
My experience in Thailand was that films about stories of romance concerning everyday people could run up to four hours. It's a wonder that a story like "Suriyothai" did not run for days! Wonderful tale and I really would not have minded if the movie was an hour longer.
The five-hour version has long been available in Thailand. It makes much more sense. The shorter versions (US cut and 3-hour theatrical Thai one) try to hard to squeeze stuff in. It is just way too much. But of course, the 5-hour one couldn't have been released in cinemas. I recommend it though.
I wanted to get the 5 hour version but the Thai DVD doesn't have English subtitles. I don't think I could watch a 5 hour film that I didn't understand however good it is. looks like I'll just have to watch the 3 hour version.
I only saw the 142' version. I quite enjoyed it but it did seem a bit choppy in places, as if they were more interested in covering a ton of stuff rather than make a smoothly flowing film. Now I know why. "They" should have split the 8-hour version into three different movies instead. The first third would have made a fine film on its own, and, heck, the distributers would have had two sequels already created without even anymore effort on their part. And that's not simply a joke. Well, I borrowed this on DVD rather than saw it in a theater. I guess I'll have to look around a little more and find that long version somewhere. And I'll have to accept that film distributers are never going to think as I think.
as iv arrived in thailand again and walked past a stall selling suriyothai, she stated from the shop owner that the thais dont want the 5 hour version [2 disc] being shown outside of thailand. they want to keep the film in thai only.when i was last here in thailand, i bought the 190 mins version, not the english version francis ford edit cut.
i really hope that king Naresuan would get released on dvd with english, and not an edit region 2 or 1
They should have just cut into a 3-part movie like there doing with the sequal King Naresuan. "Be it a rock or a grain of sand, in water they sink as the same." Lee Woo-jin (Oldboy)
Yeah, it'd be nice if the new government orders them to do that. It'd also be nice if the current strife would cause a lot more Thais to immigrate over to around me and start more restaurants so I can enjoy more Thai food without my having to learn how to make it myself. Yes, that's right, the whole world revolves around me, and I like to joke about others' misery.
