If I had to choose between watching a big budget Marvel blockbuster (say, Elektra-aagh) and viewing Man-Thing again...then I'd choose Man-Thing HANDS DOWN! Seriously, compared to some of the superhero themed blockbusters that have been released of late (Superman Returns was absolute s***) nothing beats this little low budget gem. This is what independent film making is all about. Minimal budget, cheap look, semi-professional acting and (in this case) 60% of the budget towards creating a monster that actually looks GOOD. They don't make them like this anymore...and, although this movie fared poorly...unlike MOST Hollywood producers/ directors...at LEAST Brett Leonard had the BALLS to give it a shot! I say, Bravo, Mr. Leonard! Bravo!

A "gem?" Yeah, a movie that has poor writing, numerous pointless scenes, a plot that never gets going, a romance that suddenly starts from out of NOWHERE, etc. is a gem.

Independent filmmaking is about low budget, cheap effects, and bad acting? These are supposed to be GOOD things?
"60% of the budget towards creating a monster that actually looks GOOD. They don't make them like this anymore"
Your one real praise (I know you mentioned the above things as good, but that's essentially praising the movie for sucking) is that the CGI monster looks good? That makes Man-Thing a great movie? And what is this crap about "they don't make them like this anymore?" Uh...movies with passable/good CGI and a lack of plot and acting are a DIME A DOZEN. As are crappy B-movies.
"and, although this movie fared poorly...unlike MOST Hollywood producers/ directors...at LEAST Brett Leonard had the BALLS to give it a shot! I say, Bravo, Mr. Leonard! Bravo!"
Oh yeah, the director had the "balls" to make another run-of-the-mill B-monster movie. What a courageous rebel he must be.

i love low budget films (Favorites are Boa, Skeleton Man, and Frankenfish) but this one sucks I watch sci fi films whenever i get a shot. I like abuncha superhero movies like Superman, and Elektra wasnt that bad, this one i had high hopes for but it aint nothin like the comics(which isnt a huge problem) then theres the stupid talking and dumb teens! How can you even say this is a low budget gem!?!
Yeah, sorry but I gotta agree... MAN-THING wasn't so bad.
When you look at the BIG budget, BIG STAR-POWERED ass-flakes of a movie that Hollywood tends to release like CATWOMAN, ELEKTRA or the recent PUNISHER films... you have to kind of sit back and admire what the director, actors and producers were trying to do with MAN-THING and actually be surprised that they did as well as they did!
Please don't forget that MAN-THING was a B-Movie, with B-MOVIE BUDGETS and B-MOVIE ACTORS... MAN-THING should be held to those standards and nothing greater.
For those of you who ever thought this film was going to be FANTASTIC... all you really needed to do to confirm it wouldn't be (before it even came out....) was to realise that NOBODY of any import or popularity was cast and the budget was non-existant.
This film was never intended for ACADEMY AWARD consideration and I'd rather sit through the humbly made, low budget MAN-THING once a week for the rest of my life then EVER... EVER watch:
CATWOMAN, ELECTRA, PUNISHER, BLADE III, BATMAN AND ROBIN, BATMAN FOREVER, HOWARD THE DUCK, SUPERGIRL, SUPERMAN 3, or SUPERMAN 4.....
HOLD. ON. That person who is saying "oh I know b movies and Man Thing is crap" is a complete moron. Why? Well because he listed one of the worst B movies released in the past few years that barely even had anything unintentionally funny about it called Skeleton Man. No way that crap is better than Man Thing. Man Thing was a decent little film with a decent budget and decent acting. Also I must say that I enjoy most comic book movies and that includes Daredevil, Catwoman, Elektra, and especially The Punisher which I thought was actually pretty good. I usually find something to like in most films. Catwoman had some neat action and effects and had some good unintentionally funny scenes. You people all need to lighten up.

OK... I just finished watching this a few minutes ago so my thoughts are pretty clear in my mind...
and this film was pretty awful.
Now, I have liked the character for years, reading about him in the comics, but this film could have been called SHERRIF KYLE for as much screen time Man-Thing was given. It was basically nothing more than a long 'X-Files' episode. The film didn't make any sense whether or not the comic existed or not. The film never really went into the Man-Thing's limits; what I mean is, there's no reason given why the Man-Thing wasn't attacking everyone involved all day long. He IS plant-based, so he should be even stronger during the day than at night. He could attack anyone at any time, but for some unknown reason he only attacks at night. What's Man-Thing scared of? What does he think that people could do to hurt him? At the end, it seemed all he wanted to do was to kill Schist. Man-Thing could have done that at any time he wanted to, just like he killed the racist bad guy in the office. If Man-Thing was waiting for something, then what in the world was it?
The film took a (maybe) 20 minute story and stetched it out to 90+ minutes, and just ended up a failure of a film. What a waste.

You don't like the X-files? Oh well. But though I agree with some of the points made, like obviously pointless scenes, hackneyed characters and actors, and absolutely no adherence to the story of the comic, it was still good.
Actually, I agree that it was like a long X-Files, and I liked that aspect. Plus there were more boobs and cuss words in this than in any other comic movie I've seen, and that's something, at least to me. I'm easy to please in the day and age of Alvin and the Chipmunks and Norbit, and Fantastic Four.
Others have said it in their posts on this thread, but I'll repeat: this movie was more enjoyable than the following:
Fantastic Four FF: Rise of the Silver Sucker Elektra Daredevil Superman Returns Superman 3 Batman Forever Batman and Robin Captain America (both attempts) Punisher (both attempts) X-Men 2 & 3 (though there were some cool scenes with Pyro) The Rocketeer Robocop 2 & 3 The Hulk
...and those are just the comic book movies that this one is more enjoyable than. Take for instance the Horror/Monster movie genre: this movie rate above a lot of them. Pumpkinhead, Rawhead Rex, Wendigo, etc. I also like this movie better than the two Matrix sequels, the Underworld franchise, Van Helsing, any movie made about a video game, Ultraviolet, anything by Uwe Boll, and so on. I guess the movies I'm naming are all B movies, all involving fantasy elements either in the horror, action, or scifi genres, but when the movie is supposed to be about low production costs, quick profit turnarounds, and mindless fun--which is what these movies are supposed to be (except for the Matrix, X-men, and Hulk movies), then it's good to see a movie that has some fun (yet admittedly cheesy) elements.
And in closing: boobs covered in blood in the first three minutes. 'nuff said.
