Just how big of a loss was this to Marvel?

I know it had to be a pretty big loss.

Gown removed carelessly, head less so.

Not sure what you mean by "loss". Marvel Studios has only done Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk...both being released this year. before that Studios would just buy the rights & do whatever they want (I guess Marvel didn't like that).

I'm sure Marvel would like to quickly forget this one.

It was supposed to be and filmed as a straight-to-DVD film. They shortly considered a limited theater release but decided against it. The release was held back and then SyFy bought it as an 'original movie'. It definitely has high production values and is one of the better SyFy original movies (although it essentially had nothing to do with it).

It did well in Europe and it did get a theatrical release here and a special edition 2-disc DVD. It was only in the US that they changed it because they decided that non-superhero movies didn't work well there. But they did release it on DVD first before selling it to Sci-Fi.
