so Tenia lived and got away with rape......

that´s very *beep* up and to be honest my only complaint with the movie.
Of COurse there was no happy ending in this movie but still justice would have made the movie better imho....

Who knows he may eventually get caught, because there is a physical description and DNA evidence implicating him.
It is also known where he hangs out at.

reply

DNA evidence implicating him.

Well, he does come whilst still inside her and he wasn't wearing a condom, so there certainly will be substantial DNA evidence (and surely looking for signs of rape will be the first thing police/medics would do) and he certainly seems like the type who'd already have a criminal record, so odds are he'd probably get caught quite quickly.

But this is all speculation, and doesn't stop the fact that, in the film, the wrong man was still murdered.

reply

If he survives (which is a big if), he will more than likely have some serious brain damage. So I don't really think he's getting away with anything.

reply

Le Tenia wasn't the one that got his face bashed in with the fire extinguisher. You can actually see him to the side smiling. It's a really daunting realisation, I didn't pick up on it till I watched it a second time.

"He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy!"

reply

I can't believe that you sat through the entire movie and completely missed the point.

"This is reality. These things happen."

People get away with rape all the time. Hell, they even get away with it when they are caught! In the court-room the defense acts the victim: "So, what were you wearing?" and then that becomes the focus of the entire trial and he gets off the hook because there wasn't enough clear proof that he REALLY knew he was raping her.

If you think the movie would have been "better" with a happy ending then you are a pathetic idiot. Go watch Disney-nonsense if you can't handle the real world.

Jesus, people like you on IMDb are so annoying. Please, shut the *beep* up!

Here in the US prosecutors will choose not prosecute a rape because of the way the woman was dressed or her sexual history, or the accused is well liked and respected. For them it is all about their success of getting a guilty and they will not touch a case they think they would lose.

Rapists get away with it all the time or get very short sentences.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

reply

Well, I obviously missed that.
I thought the guy who ate the extinguisher looked similar to the guy who sodomised and battered Alex in the underpass.
Another reason to find fault with the director, ...or buy glasses.

reply

Eh?? He looks nothing like the rapist, the guy who gets decimated is huge (presumably a bodyguard/bouncer for La Tenia) the rapist is a pretty small guy. Best go to specsavers, mate

reply

Ok, thanks for the smilie.

Yes, I confess to being too distracted by the violence and the dark club interior and the swirling camera and the back-to-front chronology to remember size and facial differences.

reply

I didnt like the swirling camera for most of the movie. Gave me a headache. I didnt care for this movie..His other film, LOVE was much better.

This was my only gripe with the movie too. I know it was trying to take an honest, realistic approach to a difficult topic, but the the movie would not have lost any of its power had it really been Le Tenia kissing the fire extinguisher.

The way it is now just makes me feel like it's just intended to shock the audience - "whoa! wait a minute audience! there is no vigilante justice delt out in this movie afterall!"

You say that like it's a band thing. Would you prefer it to go "it's okay audience, despite what happens every day in real life, this guy got what he deserved! yay justice."
The movie would've been much, much worse if it was all just a revenge flick told in reverse. It's not supposed to "shock you"; the shocking is a consequence of the fact that you're told the story just as it happens in real life: disgusting, violent, enraging, with absolutely no justice in the end.

In this fictional instance, yes, I'd have preferred that.

Well the film as a whole wants to evoke a strong visceral reaction from the viewer, from the swirling camera and the vicious beating at the beginning to the nauseating flashing lights at the very end. There are several revelations that occur throughout the film that add dramatic irony including that one. It certainly adds to the devastating and unsettling experience.

I can understand the grievance because I felt the same way initially. Naturally you want him to face the consequences in some fashion, but after some contemplating and reflection (I watched it for the first time 2 days ago) I realize that would have been a mistake. As it is I think it makes perfect sense because it goes with the anti-violent message of the film. I would probably have less admiration for the film if they went the other route.

Either way this film probably gave me the most traumatic and unforgettable cinematic experience I've had since my first viewing of Requiem for a Dream. Thank you Netflix.

You uh.. you should watch Antichrist by Lars von Trier. On an empty stomach.

reply

That's been in my queue for several months lol. There are still a lot of bleak movies I need to watch and I can only tolerate so much grimness and depravity in a week before I want to kill myself.

Perhaps this weekend I'll finally check it out though.

If there is one thing in the world that makes you happiest, that can turn your mood around 100% of the time, you should have it next to you and in high supply.

Some of the images from that movie .. just .. ugh.

Part of the point is that the vigilante justice gets dealt out on the wrong guy resulting in all three leads having their lives destroyed. Think of it as the anti Death Wish. The two male leads have just been involved in a brutal murder of a guy who is for want of a better term innocent and are probably going to Prison for a very long time. Rather than feed our bloodlust for revenge the director has just demonstrated how that bloodlust can go so horribly wrong if we make a mistake.

reply

But then again. Cops also make the same kinds of mistakes dont they.

reply

You're delusional. There is no justice. There is NO justice on this PLANET. People are raped, children are butchered, bombs drop, people starve, dogs get cancer, governments lie, jobs die off, and you will end up in a hole in the ground.

That's just life. I appreciate the fact that this movie doesn't INSULT us by giving us a cliche "justice" or "revenge" plot.

reply

I have to admit I like it when movies are made were there is no happily ever after. She gets raped/beat, another guy is killed, & the guy who causes it is scott free, it sucks, but it happens, & movies should reflect that. I mean, I do hate how in horror movies, the females get killed off just like the males, chances are those sick killers would rape & torture them first. The guys also, but ther just seems so much rage towards women, that they would rape at least one female. Plus, I like the idea of the surviving female & her boyfriend in the sequel you not know if the kid is his or the villain's.

The only other way to make this movie "perfect", was if they removed the part about her being pregnant before the attack, & they started the movie showing her having survived, totally healthy, with a kid in the room, only you wouldnt know who fathered the kid. If it was the BF or the rapist.

reply

If I'm not mistaken, you cannot get pregnant from anal intercourse.

Tenia gets away with rape to make the point that the main character seeking revenge was to no purpose and caused more harm than good. Had he gone to the police like his friend had begged him to, La Tenia would've been found and put in prison.
